Academy Review: Thomas More University

Thomas More is the largest university of applied sciences in Flanders, the Dutch speaking part of Belgium. It has 12 campuses in 7 cities and forms a community of almost 22,000 students and 1800 staff members and researchers. As a pioneer in the ‘learning by doing’ method, we offer students tailored learning through our innovative labs, hands-on course methodology and real-world project opportunities.

The university offers 42 full bachelor’s degrees, including 10 taught entirely in English, and 19 associate degree programz. It is part of the KU Leuven Association. KU Leuven is ranked #61 in the QS World University Rankings 2024 and 42nd place in the Times Higher Education University Rankings.


These six campuses in the province of Antwerp have programs in English– the cities that the campuses are based in are quite close to each other.

Antwerp province has quite a few airports not far from Antwerp city, such as Brussels Airport (45 km away), Antwerp International Airport (within the city limits of Antwerp), Charleroi Airport (100 km away).

Antwerp is approximately 42 kilometers north of Brussels, the capital of Belgium. The drive between Antwerp and Brussels usually takes 30-45 minutes. The train journey takes 30-40 minutes from city to city.


As a student in Mechelen, you will have many activities and places to visit. Here is the list of places to visit in Mechelen:

1. St. Rumbold's Cathedral, Mechelen City Hall, and the Brusselpoort Gate - architectural gems

2. Here are some restaurants and cafes you should visit in Mechelen. Like Café Belge, a cozy cafe with a selection of Belgian beers, coffee, and light bites. There’s also Bokes&Co, a trendy cafe, De Cirque - contemporary Belgian cuisine.

3. Clubs - Kamikaze, Moonbeat Club, RIO Club, De Loods

4. Botanical Gardens and the Zoo

As a student in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, you will have many activities and places to visit. However, you should remember that the train journey to Mechelen takes approximately 7 minutes and will take approximately 21 minutes to travel by car. Here is the list of places to visit in Sint-Katelijne-Waver:

1. Signature places to visit are Klein, Willebroek Castle, and Hof van Savoye Park.

2. Cafes and restaurants include CAFE Tinnenpoint, Café Roosendael, and Café Ons Parochiehuis.


The distance between Mechelen and Geel is about 39 kilometers, and the train journey will take about 50 minutes. Therefore, you will have opportunities to visit other cities as well.

Here are some events and places to visit in Geel:

1. Jaarmarkt (Annual Market.)

2. Carnival of Geel (Geel-Kermis) Geel’s carnival is a colorful and fun celebration featuring parades, music, and entertainment.

3. Market Square (Markt) Geel’s Market Square is in the heart of the town. Historic buildings and cafes surround it.


Thomas More University has two accommodation sites, one in Antwerp and another one in Mechelen. The other campus locations offer private accommodation. Prices range from 340 to 550 euro per month.

Campus Kruidtuin - Mechelen

Right in the centre of Mechelen, you'll find the Campus Kruidtuin residence. Thomas More rents out 51 student rooms and four studio flats to students. Two rooms have wheelchair access. For more information, please contact the university directly.

Campus National - Antwerp

The other accommodation site is in Antwerp. Please be aware that none of the Computing programmes occur on this campus, but Antwerp is only a half an hour train ride away from Mechelen en Sint-Katelijne-Waver.

Applied Computer Science

Duration: 3 years

Here are some things you will learn during this program:

  • Multiple specialisation tracks to develop your expertise;
  • Utilize advanced application development expertise to generate impactful innovations.

You will have a chance to do a full-time double degree in Finland or Switzerland, and you may be able to complete a full year of study abroad with some international companies.

Thomas More has a close relationship with applied sciences universities in different countries - Ireland, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and Finland where you can do a semester in English during Year 3 Semester 1.

Year 1

You will explore every aspect of IT, including:

  • Programming (Python, Java)
  • Web design and data analysis (SQL)
  • Computer Networks
  • Operating Systems

Year 2

From Year 2, you will go into the following specializations:

  • Artificial Intelligence: object-oriented programming,
  • Master languages - PHP, Java, WPF and ASP.Net MVC
  • Process Optimization - upgrade business processes with new technologies.

Year 3

Focus on data in the following areas:

  • data gathering,
  • data management,
  • visualization and analysis tools,
  • enterprise content management tools (for example, SharePoint)

Duration: 3 years

If you choose to study Electronics - ICT, you can choose from the following two specialties (majors):

Electronics Major

Entry Requirements

The application process at the Thomas More University of Applied Sciences is relatively straight forward. You will need three things to complete your application:

1. Your secondary education diploma. If your diploma is not written in the Latin Alphabet, a translation will be needed. More information can be found here.

2. You will also need to provide an English certificate. There are a few exemptions, check them on the website.

3. A copy of your passport or ID

EU/ EEA students:

Students from the EU do not have deadlines. However, we suggest that you apply as early as possible as there are many practical aspects that you will have to arrange.

Non-EU/EEA International Students
