Personally, I think the feature occupies too much space on the interface considering its functionality is pretty basic. Plus, it doesn’t work if you want to connect to a specialty server.

NordVPN supports all the major platforms – Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. There are also apps for Android TV, Raspberry Pi, and Fire Stick. All the applications are easy to use and tailored to a specific product's interface. Also, NordVPN supports up to 10 simultaneous connections, so you can basically cover the whole household.

NordVPN’s customer support service is top-notch. For starters, there’s 24/7 live chat for getting quick answers from a NordVPN representative in minutes. Before that, you will be redirected to a chatbot, which will try to redirect you to a detailed guide related to your issue. If your problem is more complex, you must resort to email communication. Even then, the wait is usually around a few hours. However, there’s no phone line to grant real-time assistance over the phone.

The NordVPN support page is filled with various guides and tutorials covering many topics customers will be interested in. In addition to English, supported languages include Spanish, German, Polish, Dutch, Japanese, and more.

NordVPN has an impressive network of 6300 servers across 111 countries. The server number is above average, while the country variety is the most impressive on the whole list. The entire fleet is RAM-only, meaning all servers are secure and private on a fundamental level. Essentially, RAM servers are incapable of storing long-term information, and any data on them is deleted when they’re unplugged or rebooter. NordVPN offers an impressive array of features, but only if you choose anything other than the cheapest subscription plan. That’s because the service removed Threat Protection Pro from the Basic plan, which I consider a considerable downgrade. After all, you’re no longer getting ad and tracker blocking benefits. Besides that, the cheapest tier is worthwhile if you need a powerful VPN with some great standard and unique extras.

Regarding basics, NordVPN includes two kill switches, DNS leak protection, specialty servers I mentioned earlier, split tunneling, SmartPlay, and 10 simultaneous connections. Standout features included in the Basic plan are Dark Web Monitoring and Meshnet. The first feature ensures your data isn’t exposed on the dark web. Meanwhile, Meshnet allows you to establish secure connections with various devices with the NordVPN app. Then, you can share files, create a LAN, or use another device as a VPN server.

I won’t go into much detail about NordVPN’s pricier subscription tiers and will only highlight some of their best perks. NordVPN is surprisingly affordable, considering it’s the best VPN on the market (at least in my opinion). Naturally, you’ll only enjoy reasonable prices if you commit to a lengthy two-year plan. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay at least $12.99 every month. However, NordVPN offers a few trial methods for testing the service before making a long-term commitment.

For starters, there’s the industry-standard 30-day money-back guarantee, which comes with every subscription plan. There’s also a 7-day free trial, but you can only claim it on the Google Play Store using an Android device. As expected, this trial comes with other terms and conditions. Namely, you’ll have to provide payment details, and you’ll be switched to an annual subscription if you don’t cancel before the trial ends.

NordVPN’s pricing structure is quite elaborate and suitable for any budget. There are three subscription tiers (Basic, Plus, Ultimate), each supporting three subscription periods (monthly, annual, two-year). So, if you opt for the Basic plan for two years, you'll have the cheapest $3.09/month price. However, you’ll have to pay the entire subscription cost upfront.

As such, it’s one of the most popular VPNs on the market, boasting over 14 million users worldwide. Additionally, Nord Security created a few other well-renowned cybersecurity products, thus highlighting its expertise in this crucial industry.

Firstly, NordVPN is a founding member of the VPN Trust Initiative, which aims to educate the public about cybersecurity’s importance and to maintain the industry’s high standards. Secondly, the service has a bug bounty program encouraging everyone to search for potential vulnerabilities. This dramatically improves NordVPN’s security since numerous security experts analyze the software.

Besides that, NordVPN has gone through multiple independent audits by third-party auditors. At the time of writing, NordVPN had conducted four audits of its no-logs policy, the latest being by Deloitte in late 2023.

Personal experience – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I use NordVPN almost every day on my personal desktop computer and smartphone. In short, it works great, and I usually don’t even notice it running in the background. Obviously, since I use it so much, the service does encounter an occasional issue. The most common one is that I must restart the NordVPN process on my PC. But it usually happens when I turn on my PC, and the software fixes the issue itself without trouble. I don’t use the app much on mobile, but I’m happy that it immediately connects to a server as soon as I turn it on. This speeds up the process without me needing to spend extra time.

It’s slightly cheaper than NordVPN yet has many of its appealing benefits, including top-notch security, unique features, excellent device compatibility, swift speeds, and more. In short, it’s a great, affordable alternative to the best VPN on the market.

Privacy and security – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Surfshark is solid from a technical point of view in the security and privacy departments. However, its jurisdiction in the Netherlands, a Nine-Eyes alliance country, is a cause for concern. Thankfully, those concerns can be disregarded because of the independent no-logs policy audit by Deloitte.

On the technical side, Surfshark has many of the same perks NordVPN has. For example, you’ll find a kill switch, reliable DNS leak protection, split tunneling, AES-256 encryption, and more. Moreover, all servers are RAM-only for top-tier customer data privacy. Crucially, Surfshark offers an ad blocker on its cheapest plan, making it superior to NordVPN in that regard.

Speed and performance – excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Surfshark lets you choose from secure tunneling protocols like WireGuard and OpenVPN. In-house tests showed very few slowdowns with WireGuard, which remained around 86% of the initial connection speeds on average. With OpenVPN, speeds might be slower in comparison but not very noticeable. So, you won’t encounter any lag or buffer when using Surfshark for gaming or streaming. What makes Surfshark faster than most is its implementation of SDN (Software Defined Networking) technology. In short, this means Surfshark’s entire server fleet is merged into one cohesive entity rather than a collection of separate servers. This feature also enables some of Surfshark’s unique features, like the IP Rotator.

This VPN comes with powerful streaming capabilities – I tested them myself on different devices with various servers and managed to unblock not only the usual services like Netflix or YouTube – I succeeded in accessing Max, Apple TV, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and other channels of seamless sports and events streams. If you prefer the big screen, Surfshark also has Smart DNS that you can set on any device you want.

Usability and user experience – excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I find Surfshark’s apps to be very well-made. They’re minimalistic, understandable, and not overcrowded with unnecessary details. For example, I think NordVPN’s world map is too detailed with fancy graphics. Other providers have implemented the world map interface, too, but with fewer graphical details, which I find more appealing. However, Surfshark’s approach is the best in my opinion. Still, I know some prefer the option of connecting to a specific server without having to scroll or type anything.

No matter which operating system you use, Surfshark has an app for it. It covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS devices and Chrome, Edge, and Firefox browser extensions. You can also download apps for streaming devices, like smart TVs or Amazon Fire Stick, or set Surfshark up to work on your gaming console or router. Compared to other leading market providers such as NordVPN, Surfshark excels in mobile apps and has an excellent interface and functionality – it’s optimized for seamless performance on smaller screens. Plus, one account supports unlimited device connections, which is a great boon for large households.

Like NordVPN, Surfshark offers 24/7 live chat support to ensure customers get their desired answers as soon as possible. Once again, the wait time to connect to an agent didn’t exceed a few minutes. Another similarity with NordVPN is there’s no phone line if you want to resolve your issue through a phone call.

Instead, you can peruse the extensive support page to find a written guide on your issue. While reviewing the page, I couldn’t find an option to switch the language. Naturally, non-urgent matters can be resolved using email.

Server network and locations – good ⭐⭐⭐

Surfshark offers a solid fleet of 3200 servers in 100 countries. Some larger countries include separate servers for different cities if you need more specificity. Compared to other providers, Surfshark’s server fleet numbers are on the lower end but it makes up for it with country variety. Plus, the entire network is RAM only and includes a handful of specialty servers, some of which are pretty unique. For example, Static IP servers provide an unchanging IP address, almost the same as having a dedicated IP, except it's shared with everyone. There’s also MultiHop, which reroutes your connection through multiple VPN servers and allows you to choose the server locations, while many other providers with Double VPN don’t have such customization.

In my opinion, Surfshark’s greatest advantage over NordVPN is the inclusion of CleanWeb, its ad and malware blocker. Customers also get split tunneling, and GPS spoofing on Android. Additionally, features like whitelisting (granting access to your trusted IP addresses, software, or emails) can also benefit you in different ways. For example, it enables you to selectively bypass the VPN for specific purposes, such as accessing local services, optimizing gaming latency, or ensuring uninterrupted video conferencing. Surfshark also offers a unique feature – Search – an ad-free search engine. Our team of researchers also tested it in our Surfshark review and found it quite helpful for users who prefer the real incognito mode and want to go log-free. Lastly, Alternative ID allows the creation of fake online identities and email addresses to prevent sensitive information leaks.

Cost and value – excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

As mentioned before, one of Surfshark’s greatest strengths is its lower price yet comparable quality to NordVPN. More precisely, you’ll pay only $2.19/month if you choose the most affordable subscription tier and commit to the two-year plan. As expected, paying every month will be significantly more expensive, costing at least $15.45/month just for the Starter plan. Just like NordVPN, Surfshark offers pricier subscription tiers with various cybersecurity extras. Thankfully, Surfshark includes its CleanWeb ad blocker in the cheapest tier.

Surfshark’s second subscription tier is One, which unlocks a fair number of top-tier security perks. Most notably, it includes real-time data breach alerts and 24/7 antivirus protection for your devices. Meanwhile, the final One+ tier isn’t that great, in my opinion, because it only adds Incogni, a data removal tool that’s only available in the US, the UK, the EU, and Canada. That’s hardly an issue, of course, because those are Surfshark’s main markets, but my main concern is that the top tier unlocks only one extra feature yet has a significant price spike.

Same as with NordVPN, you can use the 30-day money-back guarantee for a refund or try Surfshark out with a 7-day free trial. One upside is that Surfshark’s trial is available on the Google Play and Apple App stores.

Reliability and trustworthiness – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Since Surfshark is part of Nord Security, it practically shares its excellent reputation with NordVPN. Conversely, you could argue that Surfshark lives in NordVPN’s shadow and is merely a cheaper alternative. But that’s not the case because Surfshark is trying to pave its own identity. However, I must admit that this VPN has some flaws compared to its more successful counterpart.

For starters, the service is based in the Netherlands, which is a part of the Nine-Eyes alliance. For some, this could be a red flag. Personally, I wouldn’t dwell on this fact too much because the Netherlands has no mandatory data retention laws. Plus, Surfshark’s strict no-logs policy was audited by Deloitte in 2023. However, so far the service has conducted only one audit focused on its zero-logs policy. But, there are other independent evaluations that highlight Surfshark’s commitment to top-tier security.

Personal experience – excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

As you can imagine, Surfshark is my go-to alternative whenever NordVPN doesn’t meet my expectations. In many ways, I even prefer Surfshark over NordVPN. Namely, it has a more appealing user interface and better features (CleanWeb, Alternative ID, Rotating IP) on the base plan. It’s different if you choose pricier plans, but I don’t think many people do.

3. IPVanish – the best VPN for travelers

IPVanish is another excellent VPN due to its versatility, protection, and solid performance. Its fast connection speeds and P2P-optimized functionalities stand out, making it one of the most respected providers by experts and users. For this list, I nominate IPVanish as the best VPN for travelers because all its servers are physical, meaning they’re located in their respective countries.

Privacy and security – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Like all other best VPN software, IPVanish uses the industry-standard AES-256 encryption with SHA-512 hash functions. IPVanish operates under an audited no-logs policy and has a functional kill switch to prevent data leaks if your connection accidentally drops. However, one of the main issues with this provider is that it’s based in the US, a founding member of the Five-Eyes alliance.

Speed and performance – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This VPN supports multiple tunneling protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. In the latest tests for our IPVanish review, it consistently delivered fast speeds, retaining around 80% of the original connection speeds. The speed drops with OpenVPN and other protocols, so pair a close server with WireGuard for the fastest connection.

IPVanish successfully unblocks Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and YouTube. However, it may struggle with other streaming services, so if you stream a lot, providers like NordVPN or Surfshark might be better picks for you.

Usability and user experience – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

IPVanish’s user interface is an interesting mix between NordVPN and Surfshark. For starters, it borrows the dark and minimalistic interface with the small menu on the left from Surfshark. On the other hand, the app also includes a world map for navigation and connecting to specific regions, a feature that’s copied from NordVPN. I like that it’s minimalistic and unburdened by unnecessary graphics. Also, I appreciate that customers can move the map out of the way if they don’t want it.

Regarding device coverage, IPVanish is compatible with most devices and OSes. The application works with Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS operating systems. And like with Surfshark, IPVanish permits unlimited device connections per account for care-free security for all your devices.

IPVanish outranks many leading VPNs in customer support due to its inclusion of 24/7 live chat and a phone line. While the phone line is only available Monday through Friday, it’s available in multiple regions, including the United States, Australia, Brazil, Spain, and Mexico.

As expected, you can also contact IPVanish’s customer support through email. However, during my evaluations, IPVanish took a few days to reply to my email inquiry. Finally, there’s an extensive support page filled with various guides and FAQs for resolving issues yourself.

Server network and locations – good ⭐⭐⭐

IPVanish only offers 2400 servers across 55 countries, which is pretty low compared to other providers on this list, both regarding server numbers and country variety. One redeeming factor is that IPVanish doesn’t employ virtual servers to inflate country numbers. I believe this is a great benefit for travelers because all of IPVanish’s servers are located in their respective countries, leading to consistent performance no matter where you go worldwide. Besides that, IPVanish doesn’t have any specialty servers to optimize specific tasks.

Features and customization – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

IPVanish has split tunneling, so you can choose which applications use the VPN tunnel. You also get a free SOCKS5 proxy for fast torrenting. Like Surfshark and NordVPN, IPVanish offers obfuscated servers that help you safely use a VPN where VPN usage is closely monitored or blocked. Plus, IPVanish recently released its Threat Protection variant, which improves security by blocking malicious ads and trackers. I’d like to point out that the name is similar to NordVPN’s ad and tracker blocker, except recently, it renamed it to Threat Protection Pro, possibly to avoid confusion.

Cost and value – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

IPVanish is the first VPN on this list to offer only one subscription tier with varying durations, making it much easier to describe its pricing options. Like many other VPNs, IPVanish’s prices are lower if you sign up for more extended periods. So, the most expensive option is the monthly plan, which costs a whopping $12.99/month. The second option is the yearly plan, which costs $2.79/month. Finally, the lengthiest tier is the two-year plan, which costs only $2.19/month but only if you pay the entire cost upfront (this is the case with all such subscriptions, so I won’t mention this again). And while there’s no trial, IPVanish offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Reliability and trustworthiness – good ⭐⭐⭐

Like Surfshark, IPVanish is based in a Five-Eyes alliance country. However, this provider is based in the US, which has a poorer reputation than the EU regarding user privacy. For example, the country is home to the NSA, the Patriot Act, and other entities responsible for flagrant privacy breaches. However, IPVanish employed the Leviathan cybersecurity company in 2022 to conduct an independent audit of its no-logs policy. And while this makes the provider more reliable than VPNs without any audits, it doesn’t negate the fact that the US has a poor reputation when it comes to respecting user privacy. Thus, IPVanish, by extension, is also not perfect for online anonymity. Still, that doesn’t mean you should disregard it completely.

Personal experience – good ⭐⭐⭐

I’ll admit I don’t use IPVanish that much because I don’t travel much, and think other providers on this list do other tasks much better. This is mainly because other VPNs have many more unique features that I find fascinating. For example, Surfshark’s Alternative ID is an excellent tool for maximizing anonymity when creating online accounts. Moreover, ExpressVPN includes a password manager at no extra cost with every subscription. Plus, most providers have much more servers than IPVanish. Still, don’t let my personal opinion dissuade you from trying IPVanish. After all, it’s pretty affordable, fast, and has nailed the security basics (except for its jurisdiction).

4. ExpressVPN – the best VPN for security

While ExpressVPN’s prices are exceptionally high, its ironclad security, blazing speeds, and firm privacy promise great value for money. Compared to other contenders, ExpressVPN is double or even triple the price. However, its excellent security features and customer data protection practices, which the authorities put to the test, make ExpressVPN the best VPN for security. However, that doesn’t mean that ExpressVPN underperforms in other areas. On the contrary, it’s a great all-in-one VPN if you don’t mind its massive price.

Privacy and security – excellent ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

ExpressVPN uses best-in-class encryption (AES-256), but if you select its proprietary Lightway protocol, it uses ChaCha20/Poly1305 encryption. Also, ExpressVPN promises it doesn’t collect any logs or activity, so it’s only visible to you. For proof, it has been independently audited by Cure53, ensuring your online activities remain confidential. Plus, there are cases where the police seized some of ExpressVPN’s servers for a criminal investigation, but the hardware didn’t have any relevant information. As expected, this is because ExpressVPN, like NordVPN,Surfshark, and CyberGhost, uses RAM-only servers.

This provider offers the proprietary Lightway protocol that ExpressVPN built from scratch to compete with the likes of WireGuard. With it, the service scored average speed retention rates of 77% in my latest speed tests. As with other tunneling protocols tested in our complete ExpressVPN review, they scored similar or slightly slower speeds, respectively. Overall, the performance is excellent and suitable for browsing, streaming, or gaming, but if speed is your number one requirement, I'd recommend opting for faster VPNs like Surfshark.

ExpressVPN's ability to unblock streaming services is one of its most vital selling points. With this VPN, you can unblock almost anything online and bypass geo-restrictions to stream your favorite content. During my latest tests, it unblocked streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+, Apple TV, and more platforms. It meets this category's expectations and sets an example for other leading VPN providers.

Usability and user experience – good ⭐⭐⭐

I find ExpressVPN’s interface on desktop devices a bit too minimalistic for my tastes. While most VPN apps have separate buttons to access the most crucial features, ExpressVPN’s app only has the on button and location selection on the main menu. You'll need to dive into the settings menu if you want to enable advanced protection or any other extra feature. Speaking of which, the settings menu looks a bit outdated. I suppose aesthetics aren’t a priority for users prioritizing technical features, but I find it strange that such an expensive service like ExpressVPN has such a barebones design.

Like many other top-quality VPNs, ExpressVPN includes 24/7 live chat so users can quickly resolve any issues. There’s also email support to help with less pressing matters. I tried both methods and received replies promptly. There’s also a vast knowledge base filled with descriptive guides and tutorials if you want to try fixing ExpressVPN yourself. At least the country variety is one of the best in the market and only slightly behind NordVPN.

ExpressVPN says its entire server fleet uses TrustedServer technology, which is a fancy way of saying the service uses RAM-only servers. Naturally, there are other technologies that make it unique but suffice it to say that ExpressVPN has an excellent security foundation. However, one drawback regarding servers is the lack of specialty options for specific tasks. Well, there are Stealth servers but you won’t find the setting because they are enabled automatically when needed.

ExpressVPN offers split tunneling, MediaStreamer, stealth servers, Threat Manager, Network Lock, a router applet, and more. These features are optional, but they can certainly add to your VPN experience. For example, split tunneling can be helpful if you need to access local devices or resources while still protecting your other traffic. MediaStreamer is excellent for streaming devices, and stealth servers can help you bypass VPN blocks.

ExpressVPN plans are quite expensive compared to other top providers, starting at $6.67/month on the annual plan. Conversely, the monthly plan costs $12.95/month, which isn’t surprising because most VPNs as that much when paying every month. With the VPN purchase, you get an 8 simultaneous connection cap, which is less than what other premium providers offer. For instance, Surfshark and IPVanish give you unlimited connections. On the other hand, ExpressVPN provides a 7-day trial for mobile devices. And you can also use its 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to try out the service.

Only some providers have a reputation for reliability as good as ExpressVPN. Firstly, the service is based in the British Virgin Islands, a country without data retention laws or ties to surveillance alliances. Secondly, the service has the most outstanding number of independent audits that I’m aware of. As of August 2024, ExpressVPN was audited 18 times by independent companies.

However, what cements ExpressVPN’s reliability for me is that its no-logs policy was confirmed when authorities seized some of its servers for a criminal investigation. Ultimately, they found no valuable data. And while this incident happened a few years ago, I doubt that ExpressVPN’s policy has changed in any way. If anything, the service likely improved its security measures to maintain its reputation.

Although I find ExpressVPN’s interface unappealing, it isn’t a deal breaker for me. Additionally, I’m willing to overlook this because the service gets the job done no matter what I do on my PC. However, despite all of this, I wouldn’t use ExpressVPN simply because of its price. All the apps are easy to use and functional but some lack features. For example, iOS lacks split tunneling and a kill switch feature, which is quite a bummer if a mobile phone is your primary VPN use. In this case, NordVPN would be a better pick for you.

As is tradition, CyberGhost’s primary customer support method is 24/7 live chat. My interactions with the assigned agent were quick, professional, and concise. Naturally, more complex issues will likely turn into support tickets where you will receive a reply via email.

However, CyberGhost’s primary highlight is the abundance of specialty servers optimized for various tasks. For instance, there are the NoSpy Servers, which are owned and operated directly by the provider in its home country. Then, we have the torrenting category, which includes a good variety of countries for secure P2P worldwide. Regarding streaming, the servers are categorized by countries and particular streaming services for added convenience. Meanwhile, the gaming servers include loads of servers across a few countries, and there are no categories for specific video games.

Like most VPNs, CyberGhost has an automated kill switch to prevent data leaks. Overall, using different features was incredibly intuitive and helped me find exactly what I was looking for quickly and easily.

CyberGhost VPN is based in Romania, which is a solid choice. The country isn’t part of the Fourteen-Eyes alliance and is within the EU, meaning the GDPR protects customers. Regarding audits, CyberGhost’s no-logs policy was audited by Deloitte in 2022. As I mentioned when discussing Surfshark, one audit is great, but I believe users nowadays would like to see more, especially from such established and long-standing brands.

I am definitely a fan of CyberGhost’s VPN service and brand identity. While this may appear trivial to some, I like the provider’s Ghostie mascot and its numerous variations across its website and app. It just makes revisiting those places a bit more appealing and novel. Other VPNs with significant online identities include Windscribe and TunnelBear, which, unfortunately, haven’t made it on this best VPN list. At least they’re a great contrast to some of the more boring providers at the bottom of our list.

It appeals to me because of its excellent attitude towards privacy, cutting-edge technology, and solid performance across the board. But for this list, I nominate it as the best free VPN because of its amazing free tier, although the paid tier is also worth considering. So, this VPN is best suited both for anyone needing a trustworthy free VPN and for those needing a feature-packed VPN for privacy.

Like many first-class VPN services, Proton VPN uses so-called unbreakable AES encryption. In case your VPN connection drops, the provider’s kill switch will keep your data safe. Privacy-wise, its no-logs policy has been independently audited, and when it comes to anonymity, you can even pay with Bitcoin. Plus, Proton VPN stands out from many other VPN services because its apps are open-source. This fact dramatically improves the service’s reliability and allows experts to evaluate the underlying technology without trouble.

Speed and performance – very good ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Proton VPN is relatively fast. Although there can be some speed inconsistencies at times, the overall performance is excellent. Thanks to WireGuard and Proton VPN’s own VPN Accelerator feature, which I tested in our Proton VPN review, this provider can compete even with the speediest VPN providers, retaining up to 85% of initial speeds on average.

Proton VPN is a great streaming VPN. There’s Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, and more streaming services that Proton VPN can easily unblock. My latest tests proved its powerful streaming capabilities. The only downside is that all these unblocking capabilities aren’t available on the free version but that’s expected of any free VPN.

Proton VPN’s app is straightforward and pretty similar to NordVPN’s interface. For starters, it includes a world map if that’s your preferred way of connecting to specific countries. A downside to this method is that you can’t choose particular servers or categories, but it’s great if you need to connect quickly.

Proton’s Windows app probably provides the best user experience (it has the most settings). In contrast, macOS, Linux, and mobile users follow up with fewer features – IPv6 Leak Protection, Alternate Routing, Split tunneling, and Custom DNS Servers are Windows-only. Nonetheless, the apps are minimalistic, dark, and simple to navigate. Even for beginners, finding the way around and connecting to a VPN server in a few clicks is easy. The Linux app was not as well-designed as the Windows and macOS apps, but it was still relatively easy to use.

Sadly, Proton VPN doesn’t offer 24/7 live chat support to help customers with urgent issues. Instead, live chat is only available during office hours. Besides that, there’s the option to communicate via email or peruse the extensive knowledge base, which, as far as I can tell, is only available in English.

Proton VPN customers can choose from 8300 servers across 112 countries, which is pretty impressive. The network isn’t as expansive as with NordVPN or CyberGhost regarding both servers and countries, but it’s still above average for this list. Additionally, Proton VPN allows picking specific servers instead of just the country, giving you greater customization. However, this process is a bit laborious if you’re scrolling through hundreds of options. Moreover, Proton VPN offers many of NordVPN's specialty server categories.

For starters, Proton VPN offers aptly named P2P servers in almost every country it covers. A few countries also include Tor servers, which are the equivalent of NordVPN’s Onion over VPN. However, Proton VPN outranks NordVPN by including streaming servers in almost every country with excellent Netflix libraries. Finally, there are the Secure Core servers, which will route your connection through ultra-secure servers in privacy-friendly countries. Note that this feature needs to be enabled separately and isn’t visible in the regular server selection menu.

There’s split tunneling and the double VPN feature, which routes your traffic through two VPN servers instead of one. For additional privacy, Tor over VPN and alternate routing will help you browse peacefully in countries with restricted internet freedom. Proton also has a Quick Connect feature, which connects you to the fastest server automatically, and a VPN Accelerator, which is supposed to speed up the connection. I liked that the features I tried were fully functional and worked flawlessly.

Proton VPN’s prices aren't exactly wallet-friendly, starting from $3.59/month for 10 simultaneous connections. And like with Surfshark and NordVPN, this provider offers another subscription tier if you need more cybersecurity perks. However, unlike with its competitors, Proton VPN only offers two tiers: Plus and Unlimited. Plus is the standard VPN package we’ve grown to expect, while Unlimited includes all premium Proton services. This includes Mail, Calendar, Drive, Pass, and Wallet at a $7.19/month starting price. I think this is a great deal, considering the price isn’t far off ExpressVPN’s regular price.

There’s also a limited free version, so if you’re looking for a basic security option, it might fit your needs. It provides unlimited data and the most basic protection features, making it a suitable choice for daily use. And if this provider is not your cup of tea with a premium subscription, there’s a month-long money-back guarantee.

It is also a part of a non-profit organization, meaning it cares more about results than profit.

7. Norton Secure VPN – best VPN with cybersecurity extras

Norton Secure VPN is a good VPN for everyday use. It is easy to set up and use and offers a variety of features to protect your online privacy and security. It’s also part of the Norton suite of security products, which means you can opt for a complete security solution for your devices. By itself, Norton VPN isn’t super impressive, but it’s a great addition to its antivirus package. So, this VPN is for you if you need an affordable antivirus and VPN package that’s been around for decades.

I liked that Norton VPN uses the market-standard AES-256 encryption and has a strict no-logging policy. However, there’s no WireGuard tunneling protocol, and the kill switch is only available on Windows and Android apps. Norton VPN can protect your data online with the addition of security tools like Wi-Fi security and an ad blocker. Like IPVanish, Norton VPN is also based in the US, making it a questionable choice for online privacy.

Norton VPN uses the OpenVPN protocol on Windows and Android and the L2TP/IPSec on macOS and iOS. The speeds with OpenVPN were relatively good and allowed me to enjoy safe browsing online without any significant issues. During my speed analysis for our Norton Secure VPN review, the average download speed rate ended up being around 74%. I discovered that the closer I was to a server physically, the better the speeds.

If bypassing geo-restrictions is your main reason for getting a VPN, I suggest a streaming-optimized VPN like Surfshark. During my tests, I managed to unblock YouTube TV, the US library of Max, and the UK library of BBC iPlayer with Norton VPN. Surprisingly, these platforms had no issues, and I accessed it instantly. However, there was no luck with Netflix or Hulu.

Norton is one of those VPNs that I don’t particularly enjoy from a usability standpoint. For starters, it isn’t available as a separate VPN app; instead, it is integrated into its antivirus suite. That means it's not the centerpiece of the software, making the VPN settings rather difficult to find in a sea of other cybersecurity settings. Besides that, it’s also pretty bare bones. All you can do is select a region, connect, enable, Ad Tracker Blocking, and customize split tunneling.

However, the research team had a rather different experience. On Mac, they had somehow gotten a separate VPN app, which was easy to install and use. It had the same essential features but looked better and wasn’t so overcrowded. Well, turns out Norton had recently released a standalone VPN app for Windows. However, whenever I try to download it from My Norton Portal, it simply reinstalls Norton 360 Deluxe. We later found that there’s a separate installer for this app, but finding it was rather difficult. Regarding compatibility, Norton Secure VPN works with all popular platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Norton VPN offers numerous customer support avenues to accommodate all users. To be precise, you can reach Norton VPN using 24/7 live chat, a phone line, email, or through their social media profiles on sites like Facebook. However, getting assistance from an agent on the official site was lengthy because I first had to log in and try to resolve the issue using the AI assistant. And when I was finally connected with an agent, the experience was less than ideal. The process was quite lengthy, and the agent’s grammar skills were subpar.

As expected, there’s also a knowledge base filled with guides, tutorials, and FAQs for resolving problems at your own pace. Even better, Norton VPN’s support page is available in the widest variety of foreign languages. If you can’t find an article about your issue, an alternative option is to consult the official community forum.

As mentioned in the usability section, I couldn’t initially get my hands on Norton VPN’s standalone VPN app. Instead, I was stuck with its all-in-one Norton 360 app, which I find a bit overbearing. I suppose it’s good that Norton VPN addressed this issue by creating a separate VPN app, but it needs to iron out its compatibility issues with its other apps.

Ivacy VPN offers the modern WireGuard protocol. During our most recent tests, the provider showed excellent results and lost very little speed. Additionally, our older tests showed speed retention results of only 32%, meaning the service has greatly improved over the years.

The service claims to conduct frequent audits, but I can’t find any information about public and independent audits. At least the service is part of the VPN Trust Initiative, so I guess that’s a green flag.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get many chances to try out Ivacy VPN for myself. It seems like an alright service at first glance, but it has many surface-level similarities to PureVPN. Some Reddit users even claim that the service leases servers from PureVPN. Combine that with the provider’s lack of external audits and questionable jurisdiction, and you start to piece together why it’s so cheap.

9. TotalVPN – affordable and well-rounded VPN for security

TotalVPN is based in the US, which isn’t an excellent location for privacy due to its ties to the Five-Eyes surveillance alliance. Even worse, the service lacks independent audits that confirm the VPN doesn’t excessively share data with unwelcome third parties.

Regarding security, TotalVPN includes a kill switch to ensure your IP address doesn’t leak during unexpected disconnections. There’s also the option to automatically enable TotalVPN whenever you connect to an unfamiliar Wi-Fi network. Unsurprisingly, the service employs solid AES-256 encryption to keep connections impenetrable.

From a technical perspective, TotalVPN isn’t fast because it lacks the WireGuard protocol. Moreover, it runs on the modern WireGuard protocol for added reliability and improved performance.
