There's marketing, payments, taxes, stock management, and much, much more – enough to turn this very exciting opportunity into a serious challenge.
Back in the day, I myself tried to build online stores for a living. I can tell you one thing – it's difficult. But nowadays, with a great eCommerce website builder, it can get a lot less difficult.
This is exactly what I'm going to talk about in this post: the best eCommerce website builders that can help you set up and manage your online stores, making everything easier than ever before. And while all the options here do just that, they're still very different.
Some are visual website builders with some excellent eCommerce features baked in – others are eCommerce platforms first, and everything else second. Which one's right for you? I hope that by the end of this post, you'll be able to answer this question yourself.

Wix tries to please everybody. And somehow, it manages. It's both a simple website builder, letting you cook up a simple online shop in just a couple of minutes and no work at all. But it's also a very highly editable platform.
The powerful editor lets you make a completely custom store of your dreams – and fill it with intricate third-party integrations. Or even code it yourself, if that's what you feel like doing.
Really, as I figured out on my Wix review, it all depends on what things you need and what choices you make. It all starts early – right after registration, I was asked what type of builder I want to work with.
Wix ADI is an AI-powered builder that builds sites by asking you questions. "Who are you?" "What do you want to build?" "What do you want it your site?"
It goes deep sometimes. For instance, after uploading the business' logo and adding in its details, my site was built with the same color scheme and contact forms already pre-built.
This is gold if you’re a beginner as there’s zero technical skill required. It’s also heaven-sent if you just don’t want to spend all that much time setting up your online store. Things to do, places to be, and all that jazz, you know?
On the other hand, if you’re feeling inspired and want a more hands-on role in building your eCommerce site, you don’t need to pick a different platform. Simply pick a different building option – Wix’s regular editor is the one for you.
It starts the other way around: you choose from one of over 700 website templates...
And then, get to use the Wix Editor, allowing you to edit just about anything they have. It's a serious editor – and it might be even a bit intimidating at first, with all the design options. But once you get used to it, the Editor becomes a real treat.
It's an all-around option, letting you quickly build an online store of your dreams – no matter what they are, or what your skill level is.
Wix eCommerce features
Of course, looking good is only part of the equation. An eCommerce platform should naturally come with some business-focused features.
So, let’s talk about Wix doing just that.
It has a pretty solid app market with over 250 options. Many of them are designed to help to build, run, and scale an online store. Some are free while others offer both free and paid versions.
Among the apps are:
- Accounting – including QuickBooks Online, Xero, Bling, and Xero Bridge.
- Dropshipping – Modalyst, Spocket, and 365DROPSHIP.
- Fulfillment – including Shippo, Multiorders, and ShipBob.
- Stores – including Wix Stores, Amazon, Etsy shop, and eBay Store.
RIght out of the gate, you’ll also get these solutions:
- Mobile-optimized site – your site is automatically optimized whether your customer is viewing from a mobile, tablet, or desktop.
- 50+ payment gateways – with a 2.9%+30c transaction fee.
- Management solutions – including multichannel inventory management, shipping, and business automation.
- Detailed analytics including top products, traffic reports, and custom reports.
- Integrated marketing tools.
Everything about your eCommerce can also be managed using the Wix Owner App. With it, you have access to vital functionalities right from your mobile device. This includes adding new products, fulfilling orders, tracking inventory, and even sending invoices.
And for beginners users, Wix makes running a store almost as simple as making a website, with excellent guides and tutorials, as well as a simple item management system.
Alas, while I have — so far — raved about Wix, it isn’t completely faultless.
One thing to remember is that once you’ve signed up for Wix, your shop is pretty much stuck on the platform. See, scaling is only possible within Wix’s own system and the platform doesn’t allow the exporting of your site.
So, while you may be able to transfer certain data, you can’t migrate the entire store to another eCommerce platform. This is definitely something worth considering if you have big goals to turn your store into a massive enterprise. So if you pick Wix, you’ll have to commit to it.
So, a natural question to pop up at this point is – just how much this commitment to Wix will cost?

Overall, Wix has definitely earned its place in this list of the best eCommerce website builder. While it may not suit big corporations or massive projects, it offers essentially everything that small business owners and entrepreneurs could ask for.

2. Shopify – best advanced eCommerce platform

If you’re looking for a dedicated eCommerce platform meant for serious businesses, ask and you shall receive — in the form of Shopify. The platform takes selling online very seriously and comes with scores of features that help you to build, manage, and grow an online store.
Plus, its highly customizable and easy-to-use nature makes all of this genuinely complicated stuff as simple as possible. It may be an eCommerce platform with tons of advanced features but it’s still simple enough to navigate – even for newbies.
If you just want to get a site up swiftly, that’s not a problem at all. Just select a theme, customize where you want to, upload your products, and you’re ready for business.
The online store builder is simple and focuses mostly on your products.
The additional tutorials will also help you know more about what this platform can do – as showcased on my Shopify review, it will even show different tutorials depending on your needs and experience.
As for the site's design, the themes are modern and very well-polished.
But, there is one complaint that you absolutely must hear before jumping right in. Shopify offers over 70 themes, only 9 of them are free. The other 60+ themes range from $100 to $180.
Now, I don’t deny that these paid themes are absolutely gorgeous. They are thoughtfully designed with user experience in mind. But, at $100 to $180 a pop, they aren’t exactly affordable — especially if you’re running a small business or just starting out.
If you’re wondering, yes, you can customize and edit a free theme with the platform’s drag-and-drop builder to avoid paying that. Things like colors and fonts are easy enough to change. But, frankly, without coding knowledge, there’s only so much editing that you can do on your website.
It looks pretty basic – just take a look.
But, if you absolutely must have a lovely custom theme, there might be an interesting alternative for you. Shopify’s code-friendly nature allowed for the emergence of third-party themes. There are many marketplaces that will offer you different Shopify themes – and they will cost around $50.
Shopify eCommerce features
Selling online is all about the products, right? Well, Shopify provides a number of features to help in this regard.
Some of the more handy ones include order and inventory management, product organizations, and video and 3D product view support.
Then, it moves forward, offering a variety of functionalities that are vital for online shops. Among them are:
- Integration with over 100 third-party gateways.
- Multiple payment options including credit cards and accelerated checkouts like Shop Pay.
- Management of customers’ contact information and order history.
- Staff accounts where you can give your employees select access to data and tools.
- Automatic shipping rates and taxes.
- Abandoned checkout recovery.
Most of these features can be accessed via Shopify’s mobile app. You can use it to update your store, manage inventory, and even look up customer profiles.
A lot of Shopify features are marketing-focused. No surprise, considering how important marketing can be. You’ll get templates for email marketing campaigns, automatically generated sitemap.xml, and the ability to create highly targeted discount codes.
To minimize the guesswork of how you're doing, the platform offers Google Analytics, product reports, traffic/referral reports, and more.
And then, there’s the Shopify App Store, offering the biggest selection of third-party applications from the platforms on this list – with over 4,100 apps from various categories to manage and enhance your online store.
There’s everything from marketing, inventory management, and customer support to productivity and finances.
Speaking of finances, let's talk about them for a little bit.
Here are the Shopify plans – and how much they cost:

The cheapest plan costs $29/mo and, if you scale up, looking for better transaction fees, you’ll need to fork out either $79/mo or $299/mo.
Plus, bear in mind that if you’re decking out your online store with some swanky third-party apps and premium themes their costs add up, and the price can skyrocket even more.
However, objectively, Shopify can be a worthy investment. Yes, the price is on the higher end. But, in exchange, you have all the tools and features you need to seriously grow your online store. So, “you get what you pay for” really does apply here.
With its wide-ranging advanced features and ease of use, Shopify has proven itself to be one of the top candidates for the best eCommerce platform.
It's big, it's expensive – and it's absolutely excellent.

3. WordPress with WooCommerce – flexible eCommerce solution

WordPress is the world's most popular website building solution. Paired up with WooCommerce, an eCommerce suite made by the same team, you get an all-in-one package, giving you full design freedom and excellent functionality all over.
WooCommerce is ideal for 2 types of online store owners. First, those who like full control over their stores and want things to be done according to their specifications. And, second, those who are in search of the most inexpensive platforms out there.
That's because WordPress is a pure DIY open-source software solution.
It means that you're not restricted to the platform's own design and business solutions, and can use whatever rit’s entirely possible to edit, change, and customize almost every aspect of the site. One of those possibilities is turning it into an online store – with a WooCommerce plugin.
In fact, this is the first eCommerce platform I myself have personally used. As a student, I wasn’t really able to set aside a few hundred bucks a year to make an online store. I wanted to go cheap, and this was the perfect option.
To get started, you need to get yourself a hosting account and a domain. There are hundreds of hosting providers available – we cover some of the best ones on our best eCommerce hosting post.
Some plans are very affordable, like Hostinger, starting at just around a dollar a month: but I suggest upgrading to a more advanced plan for better load times, increased resources, and a free domain name.
Once the hosting account is in your possession, you'll have a titanic task of downloading and setting up both WordPress and WooCommerce.
Just kidding. It's one button away on your dashboard.
Once that is done, you'll be going through a setup process – and here, you'll see one little caveat. Despite being free, WooCommerce will charge you for selling certain types of products.
The item manager itself is simple, acting more like a blank canvas than anything – but you'll be given plenty of options to add and edit your products.
For choosing a theme, you'll get a lot of WooCommerce-own options, too. Some will be free, others will cost around $100 a piece.
The real treasure, however, lies outside of WooCommerce. Here, a quick search online and you’ll find quite literally thousands of themes designed for eCommerce. Sites like Envato Market or ThemeForest are a good starting point offering an excellent theme for a single payment of around $50.
WooCommerce eCommerce features
Some of WooCommerce’s most convenient features for online stores include:
- Ability to accept various payment options.
- 140 payment gateways available
- Multilingual content and prices in multiple currencies.
- Automated tax calculations.
- Live shipping rates.
- Google Analytics.
On top of that, if you want even more tools and features, the WooCommerce Extensions Store is your destination. Here, you’ll find hundreds of free and paid extensions to address your store’s needs. Essentially everything from payments and shipping to marketing and management. There's even WooCommerce Payments – a baked-in solution for accepting credit cards, which will cost 2.9%+30c from each transaction.
As for WordPress itself, you'll gain access to over 50,000 plugins as well: and honestly, there's anything you can think of, available in both free and premium packages.
When it comes to the price, WooCommerce and WordPress are free to use. But as mentioned earlier, some features might cost extra. Plugins, extra functionalities, and themes can all cost a good amount of money. Plus, you'll need to buy a hosting account: and while cheap versions might be alluring, serious businesses might want to opt for something more serious.
This is why I suggest going to slightly more expensive, WooCommerce-centered plans.
WooCommerce costs however much you can afford, it's cheap, flexible, and powerful. So there's no surprise that many online store owners choose a combination of WordPress and WooCommerce.
4. Squarespace – excellent designs for a beautiful store

Squarespace is a heavyweight in the website builder game. It carved a name for itself primarily based on its beautiful themes. But it's not the looks that attract: on top of excellent eCommerce themes, Squarespace also offers an easy-to-navigate dashboard and built-in business features. It's one of the best eCommerce website builder packages out there.
I'm not breaking any big news here. It's important how your store looks. And while a basic theme might be simple and easy to set up, it won't be able to wow your visitors or tell your brand's story and identity.
But we aren’t all blessed with amazing design skills or coding skills – this is where Squarespace comes in hot.
Once you set up your website, you'll get to choose from multiple base store themes. I took a deep dive looking at them on my Squarespace review. They're modern, minimalist, perfectly utilizing negative space, and showcasing your media and products in the brightest light possible.
With the beautiful themes on offer, Squarespace shines bright as a retail website builder.
And, if any of the components are not to your liking, it’s easy enough to customize with Squarespace’s drag-and-drop editor. Things like fonts, elements, and layouts can quickly be changed to suit your taste.
But, a pretty face can only get you so far, and aesthetics alone won’t put food on the table.
Luckily, Squarespace also took care to design an all-in-one interface that’s a great pick for beginners trying to run their own business.
As “all-in-one” might sound overwhelming, the interface is actually extremely easy to navigate. Straightforward and organized, it’s almost foolproof. There’s absolutely no technical skill required and no steep learning curve to master the interface.
Here, you can manage and tweak various aspects of your online store. Everything from marketing and scheduling to analytics and settings is at an arm's reach.
This is where you'll also all the tools required to run an online store.
Squarespace eCommerce features
Using Squarespace as an online store builder is very simple: the platform itself provides a guided setup process, during which it will make you a nice pre-built store.
You'll even get some placeholder products, depending on what you wish to sell – mine was full of vinyls and merch!
Once the store is nice and ready, you'll gain access to numerous features. These extensive features are another one of Squarespace charms – you can do a lot without having to rely heavily on third-party integrations. That means no additional fees, no scouring through reviews, or worrying about whether something really works.
Some of the included eCommerce-focused features include:
- Product management.
- Sales, promotion, and launch scheduling.
- Inventory management.
- Social integrations.
- Analytics and report.
- Email marketing campaign management.
But if you want to do something extra – like do advanced bookkeeping on your finances, print-on-demand, or shipment management, there are still some extra third-party integrations you can use.
So, what’s the price of beauty and ease of use? Well, Squarespace isn’t dirt-cheap, but overall, it’s just around the market average. The cheapest plan that supports eCommerce costs $18/mo.

But I would advise you to skip the $18 plan and move straight to the $26 Commerce plan. How come?
The Business plan also includes a 3% transaction fee for each thing you sell. While that sounds like relatively little, a modest $2,000 month will mean that Squarespace will take an additional $60 just for being there. It’s not a good plan for a growing business at all.
Basic Commerce ($26/mo) or Advanced Commerce ($40/mo) add a few extra eCommerce features, like point-of-sale for in-person shopping, customer accounts, checkout on your domain, sales on Instagram, and more – as well as 0% transaction fees.
For transaction, you'll be offered options for Stripe, Square, PayPal, and AfterPay – the transaction fees will be around 2.9%+3-0c.
All things considered, Squarespace’s visuals might be its main attraction – but this online store builder offers an excellent beginner-friendly way to set up and run an online store.

5. Weebly – easy to use eCommerce platform

Once a basic but popular website builder, Weebly is now going all-in on eCommerce. It focuses on offering affordable website-building plans with an emphasis on online sales. This, coupled with its ease of use, makes it the go-to platform for small businesses, beginners, and those looking for a bargain.
Being a mix of a pure website builder, and an eCommerce platform, Weebly tries to be the best of both worlds. The beauty and ease of use of a website builder combined with convenient eCommerce features.
It behaves fully like a website builder. There is a bunch of eye-catching templates. While the selection is, unfortunately, rather limited, the templates that are offered are fairly polished and sleek — perfect to highlight your products.
Of course, the templates are customizable to suit your needs and preferences, too. You can tweak, edit, and personalize using Weebly’s drag-and-drop editor, the standout feature highlighted on my Weebly review.
It's where Weebly’s online pedigree shines the most. It’s intuitive, responsive, and straightforward that even a total rookie shouldn’t have any problem navigating it.
Here, all the element options are neatly arranged to your left. And, you can easily and quickly add elements as well as change things like color palette, fonts, featured products, and more. Plus, you can even change the entire template if that’s what you want, and all of your added data will remain.
Of course, these features are convenient and the options offered here should be sufficient for most online owners. But, entrepreneurs who want more customizations might find the editor to be basic and restrictive since you’re only allowed to edit selected elements.
Well, further customizations aren’t out of the question since Weebly has the option for full CSS/HTML control and editing.
But, you know what that means: you’ll need to have some coding skills up both your sleeves.
But really, it is not needed – you can have a perfectly great time by just choosing a theme, adding your products, setting up shipping and taxes, and your online shop is good to go.
Weebly eCommerce features
Weebly does pretty well in dealing with eCommerce basics. The platform offers these features to help make your and your customers’ lives easier:
- Inventory management.
- Order processing and management.
- Multiple payment options such as credit card, Square, and Stripe.
- Shipping management.
- Real-time shipping rates and automatic tax calculator.
- Automated abandoned cart emails.
Moving from eCommerce to business in general, you'll find search engine optimization tools, analytics, and integrated email campaigns.
The dashboard itself is made to be as focused on eCommerce as possible: you'll be given options for adding and editing products and orders, seeing reports on your sales and marketing efforts, and more.
If you need even more features, there’s always Weebly’s app center as well, including plenty of additional features, like print-on-demand, shipping tools, custom order tracking and more.
Here, you’ll find hundreds of third-party apps to enhance your online store. There’s everything from selling and shipping to communication and marketing. Some of the apps are free while you’ll have to pay for others.
For payments, you'll get options for Stripe, Square, and PayPal Express. The payment fees are 2.9%+30c – a standard in the market.
Speaking of paying – let’s talk about Weebly’s pricing. Weebly has 4 plans but only 2 of the plans come with eCommerce features: Pro ($12/mo) and Business ($25/mo).
These are the available options:

Now, that actually sounds pretty good. But, here’s the thing: Pro is actually quite limited, with the worst thing of all being the additional 3% transaction fee, that's going to cost you a fair bit extra in the long run.
To remove that, and get additional selling features, like abandoned cart recovery and advanced shipping calculator, you'll need to upgrade. And the $25/month Business plan actually offers excellent value – so Weebly this does well in pricing.
If you want simple setup and management processes for your business, and a simple website editor to quickly edit just about anything on your website – Weebly is a great pick.

6. GoDaddy website builder – excellent eCommerce marketing features

No fuss, just business — that GoDaddy’s strategy as an eCommerce platform. The company’s main appeal is that it focuses on offering a simple and business-focused platform. Plus, GoDaddy’s excellent built-in smart marketing tools, tracking your work and performance will be lifesavers for many small businesses.
Some people might spend weeks perfecting their online stores, debating for hours over shading on a button. Others just want to get their online stores up ASAP and get to selling.
If you’re the latter, GoDaddy online store builder might be your prince charming: it got high marks on the GoDaddy website builder review due to its simplicity and great business features.
With GoDaddy, you can get your shop up and running in less than an hour. The setup process is as easy as it can be and requires you to answer just two basic questions: the type of online shop you’re setting up and a name for it.
You'll be given a simple base design, based on your chosen category – it's simple, aesthetically-pleasing and focused on the visuals of your brand or products. It is also edited using the great GoDaddy editor.
I'm a fan. The editor is intuitive and easy enough to use, and you get options to control the color spectrum, change the layouts, and build the website just how you want it to look.
To turn your basic website into a massive store, it's all pretty simple: you just get to choose from various pre-made blocks for adding a PayPal button, items, price lists, and more.
You might find this editor limited: it's only a handful of layouts and a bunch of sections. But this is all about simplicity – and GoDaddy is making the required sacrifices.
GoDaddy website builder eCommerce features
GoDaddy here goes all-in on its business-focused nature. The eCommerce platform offers a selection of features that make selling online easy-peasy.
Among these features are:
- Automatic syncing of sales and inventory across all sales channels.
- Social media integration.
- Google Shopping listings.
- Numerous payment options.
But, that’s not all. GoDaddy also knows its target audience well and is aware that it’s a tool for busy entrepreneurs who are juggling a million plates at once.
So, to sweeten the deal, the platform also provides some excellent marketing features for people who need it badly – but don’t know where to start. Or, simply don’t have the time for it.
Called InSight, it's a tool by GoDaddy, that helps you build and achieve your goals. You start simply by telling the platform what you want to do.
So, say that you have an online store selling jewelry. Once you have input your industry and your goals, the system will collect data from millions of similar websites. Then, with the data on hand, InSight’s algorithm will come up with a custom action plan for your site.
At this point, you just have to follow along with the action plan. There are no technical skills or prior experience required from your side — making it perfect for first-time business owners.
The same approach can be seen when building your online store. All you need to do is to follow the prompts given to you, making everything as simple as it can possibly be.
Apart from that, you can do a lot of things with GoDaddy, such as:

- Google My Business.
- Email marketing.
Now, you’re probably wondering what’s GoDaddy’s price tag like with these extensive features? Surprisingly, it isn’t too bad.
Here's what the plans are like.

From these plans, however, only the $17.49/month is going to offer you eCommerce. Square, PayPal, and GoDaddy Payments are the possible payment gateway options, with a starting fee of 2.9%+30c – a classic.
But on top of the eCommerce features, it also adds a lot of excellent email marketing, as well as SEO and smart social media features. For a plan that aims to make life much easier for online store owners – I’d say that it’s a good investment.
Overall, GoDaddy packs quite a punch with its no-nonsense platform that houses a ton of in-house business and marketing features.

7. Volusion – all-inclusive eCommerce platform

Volusion is a yet-another pure eCommerce platform on this list. With a solid list of advanced built-in features, it offers an all-inclusive suite for even the most particular of businesses.
Another thing that I like a lot about Volusion is the appealing themes – all of them are eCommerce-centered, modern, and very easy on the eyes.
However, there's a price-related, only 11 themes are free while the other 34 themes will cost you $180 each. That’s quite a burden on the wallet — especially for small online stores. But, as this is a one-time expense, you might be able to justify it.
There is also no established third-party market for additional Volusion themes, which means that you’re stuck to what Volusion offers you – which can be a bit of a bummer.
