An aspiring hitman took a job at a murder-for-hire website only to discover that it was just a joke. He has since pleaded guilty and faces ten years in a federal prison.
At some point in our lives, we may encounter money struggles that force us to take alternative measures to ensure that there’s food on the table for our families. But would you consider killing someone for a few thousand dollars?
Josiah Ernesto Garcia, 23, of Toledo, Ohio, was looking for contract mercenary jobs when he stumbled across a website that seemed to answer his money troubles.
The website ‘rentahitman.com’ was formerly used to advertise a cybersecurity start-up until the company eventually failed. Strangely enough, over the next ten years, the website started receiving inquiries about murder-for-hire services.
The administrator of ‘rent a hitman’ capitalized on these requests and turned the failed cybersecurity advertising website into a murder-for-hire parody site that featured fake reviews about its services.
There was even a section where people could ask for services and a form where people could apply to become a hitman.
Garcia immediately submitted an application expressing his interest in becoming a hired killer, explaining that he had “military experience and rifle expertise.”
Following the application, he sent documents verifying his identity and a resume that said he was an expert marksman. According to Garcia, he worked for the Air National Guard, a federal reserve of the United States Air Force, since July 2021.
The aspiring hitman told the administrator of ‘rent a hitman’ that he was looking to work as soon as possible.
Garcia was ready to go, so he met with a potential client who agreed on a target and a downpayment of $2,500. The client provided Garcia with a package of data on the victim, including photographs and other information about who he wanted ‘dealt with.’
Unbeknownst to him, Garcia’s “client” was actually an FBI agent and gave Garcia false information.
The pair both agreed on the terms of the agreement, but Garcia had one more question: does he need to provide photographic evidence of the dead body.
He was then arrested immediately, and a search of his home was conducted, where they recovered a rifle.
Garcia will be sentenced next year and faces up to 10 years in federal prison
