Netflix has announced the second season of the blockbuster series Squid Game will premiere on December 26th. The final season will be released in 2025.
The news, circulated by the streaming service on social media, was accompanied by an Olympics-inspired teaser trailer featuring racing players and Squid Game guards in their iconic pink suits.
“The real game begins,” the trailer declared.
Netflix revealed few details about the upcoming seasons, but it is known that the main protagonist of the first season, Seong Gi-hun, or Player 456, is set to return for the second one.
Squid Game director, writer, and executive director Hwang Dong-hyuk offered additional plotline hints in a letter shared online, in which he said that shooting the second season felt “surreal.”
“It's been almost three years since Season one was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place,” Hwang said.
“Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of Season one, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn't seem to be an easy opponent this time either,” he said.
“The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season three, which will be brought to you next year. I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story,” Hwang said.
“We'll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you're excited for what's to come,” he added.
The South Korean dystopian thriller was released worldwide on Netflix in 2021 to runaway success. The critically acclaimed show has become an international hit and the platform’s most-watched series, with 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first four weeks.
