The new update could help users stay less distracted on the road.
Apple has patented a new way of displaying Maps information, focusing on how it can be viewed while driving.
The company's issued patent, "User interfaces with dynamic display of map information," focuses on making map display more user-friendly.
Right now, a driver who uses CarPlay has to shift their attention from the road to a device to see navigation-related information.
Considering this, the new system would be able to show the map from different viewpoints and angles, reducing the number of times a user has to interact with a device or touch screen to look for information or adjust settings.
The document also revealed that the new system could help save battery life since less processing power would be needed for displaying maps.
The new system could show the maps on the dashboard or instrument cluster. It's supposed to make it easier for a user to quickly check road details without shifting their head to the screen.
The upgraded CarPlay would also support Siri, allowing a driver to change the map's display through a voice command.
Apple CarPlay, a system that allows information to be displayed from a user's iPhone to a car's infotainment unit, was first introduced in 2014.
Google added a feature earlier this year for iPhone and CarPlay users that shows their speedometer and speed limits while using Google Maps.
It was previously reported that Apple is working on updates for CarPlay to provide users with a more customizable experience for maps and navigation.
