Fujifilm Corporation has announced that it's working on its first-ever filmmaking camera, the Fujifilm GFX Eterna.
Fujifilm's latest device will be made specifically for video production and will be released in 2025.
The new device will come equipped with a large-format sensor GFX 102MP CMOS II HS, which is about 1.7 times bigger than a typical 35mm camera sensor.
The large-format sensor and an image processor, X-Processor 5, allow users to capture high-quality, three-dimensional images.
The same sensor and image processor are also used in other Fujifilm products, such as the mirrorless digital camera FUJIFILM GFX100 II.
Fujifilm is an established name in the film industry. It has been creating products for filmmakers since 1934 and has an excellent reputation.
In 2017, the company released the GFX series, a mirrorless digital camera with a large-format sensor almost two times the size of a 35mm sensor.
The GFX Eterna is the company's first camera for video production, combining its experience in video production with the technology of the GFX series.
Fujifilm revealed that it's also developing a 32-90mm power zoom lens and a mount adapter.
Users online have already started a discussion about the company's future video production.
"I've loved my Fujifilm cameras for stills the last ten or so years – stoked to see what will come of this new endeavor," shared one Reddit user.
"I'm using a couple of GFX 100II for the majority of my video work (commercials, narrative, lifestyle, travel/tourism, talking heads). There are plenty of issues, but I really like the image from the sensor, and a lot about working with them [...]," added another Redditor.
"While Sony and Arri are great, it's always good to have options and make sure no one is slagging. You may not like their products, but both Red and Blackmagic forced the market to innovate and change," another user online said, adding that it’s a good thing the film industry has multiple “niche manufacturers.”
It's not yet known how much the new camera will cost. The company's current GFX100 II is priced at $7,499.00.
Fujifilm's new device will be first showcased in November at InterBEE 2024, a conference for experts from the media and entertainment industry.
