The feature will likely become standard for all of the latest Samsung smartphones.
With a couple of months to go until Samsung’s Galaxy S25 flagship announcement, we’re starting to read more leaks about the new device.
The latest information shows us that the the S25 may be the first Samsung flagship to get A/B updates, also called seamless updates.
The feature enables a smartphone to download and verify updates in the background, allowing a user to continue using the device during the update.
Seamless updates were first introduced by Google back in 2016 and were implemented by other manufacturers quite a while ago.
However, Samsung didn’t rush to implement the feature and only this year announced its first capable device, the Galaxy A 55.
Now, it appears that the feature will find its way to the flagship series. Leaker Chun Bhai (via Sam Mobile) said in a post on X said that the upcoming Samsung release will use seamless updates, without providing more details.
Seamless updates cannot be implemented at the firmware level, which means that manufacturers are required to make changes in hardware in order to adopt them.
To enable seamless updates, a smartphone’s storage is divided into two partitions: partition A and partition B. Each partition holds a full copy of the system software, but only one is active at any given time.
When an update is available, the device downloads a copy to one of the partitions, allowing the other to keep running the system without interruptions.
After the update is installed, the device requires a reboot, during which it switches to the updated copy.
