Digital detox in pink: HMD launches Barbie-themed dumbphone

The Barbie-revival era might not be over yet after the release of an all-pink dumbphone.

Human Mobile Devices (HMD), in collaboration with Mattel, Inc., recently launched the Barbie flip phone.

The company shared that the all-pink device “brings a burst of nostalgia and a splash of glam to your everyday life in the form of a retro flip phone.”

The phone has replaceable covers and two cases, as well as some accessories, such as a beaded phone strap, sparkly gems, and Barbie stickers for decoration.

According to Lars Silberbauer, the Global Chief Marketing Officer of HMD, the phone was created “for less browsing and more fun.” The phone functions as a mobile phone that lets users make calls and text but prevents them from spending time browsing and scrolling.

The phone specs show that it’s equipped with a 5MP camera with a flash to create Y2K-style images.

After the phone is switched on, it welcomes users with a “Hi Barbie!” sound and provides them with a selection of Barbie-themed wallpapers.

The dumbphone also supports its special app, “Digital balance tips,” and for those who find themselves bored, they can play “Malibu Snake,” a version of the retro phone game classic.

The Barbie Phone, which works with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon wireless networks, costs $129.

Pre-ordering will start on September 23rd, 2024, and the phone will be released on October 1st, 2024.

For HMD, this isn’t its first rodeo when it comes to creating dumbphones – the company has already introduced three upgraded versions of Nokia phones.

With more people looking to limit their time spent on the phone and starting to practice digital detox, dumbphones seem to be making a comeback.
