Apple’s iPhone 16 unveiling: what to expect and how to watch

Apple is expected to announce its 16th generation of iPhones, the anniversary Apple Watch, a new budget watch option, and AirPods on Monday.

Typically, Apple unveils its devices in pre-recorded events, and this time should be no different.

Apple’s Glowtime event will begin at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET) and can be streamed on the company’s website or watched via the YouTube link below.

Four new iPhones – the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max – will be at the center of Apple's announcements. All four will be capable of running Apple Intelligence, and new AI capabilities will be one of their main selling points.

Apple will have plenty to share about its AI capabilities and new operating system, iOS 18. However, we know that some AI features will not be available until next year.

Four iPhone 16 models

According to rumors, iPhone 16 smartphones will not feature major design changes. However, there will be some updates from the hardware and camera side.

Apple’s new devices are expected to get a new A18 chip, which will be capable of handling AI tasks and improved RAM, at least for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models.

One of the new updates of the iPhone 16 should be a new Capture button for better photography.

The button will be pressure-sensitive and able to provide haptic feedback. According to MacRumors, a light press will result in autofocus, a harder press will make a shot, and pressing to the left and right will result in zooming in and out.

It’s unclear whether the button will be seen across all four new iPhone 16 models or reserved for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max premium versions.

In addition, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to feature the Action button, introduced with last year’s Pro models, and a rearranged camera system. It will now be aligned vertically instead of diagonally, allowing for spatial video capture.

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to stay the same size, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to have bigger screens, which now will be 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively.

The Pro models are also said to get a new 48MP ultra-wide camera, up from 12MP in last year’s models. Meanwhile, iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature 5X optical zoom, an improvement over 3X optical zoom in last year's device.

All of the new Apple smartphones should feature minor battery improvements and slightly refreshed color options, which may now include a gold titanium option.

Apple Watch and AirPods

Apple will also unveil the 10th edition of its Apple Watch, possibly called Apple Watch X, at its Glowtime event.

Rumors suggest that it will have a slimmer design and bigger screen sizes, up to 45mm and 49mm, as opposed to the current 41mm and 45mm.

In addition to the regular Apple Watch and the premium version of Apple Watch Ultra, the company is expected to announce a new, cheaper version called Apple Watch SE.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new watch should be able to detect sleep apnea. It's likely that some of the rumored features, like a blood oxygen sensor and hypertension, will not make it to this year’s models.

The new Apple accessories lineup will also include refreshments for Apple’s AirPods. Two new models should replace the entry-level second-generation AirPods and the mid-tier third-generation model.

The biggest updates to the AirPods should be improved audio quality, a USB-C charging port, and a new case and design, similar to the AirPods Pro.
