Fortnite lets parents set playtime limits for kids

Kids are now at their parents’ mercy in terms of how long – and when – they can play Fortnite, according to new rules.

Fortnite developer Epic Games has updated its parental control rules so that parents and guardians can manage and view how much time their child spends in the game.

Parents now have the option to set up time limits for their child’s account in the Parental Controls sections in the Fortnite main menu, or the Epic Account Portal online.

Once enabled, the new control tool allows parents to set a time limit of how long their child can play per day and choose specific time windows when they can play.

It’s also up to the parents to decide if they will even allow their child to request more time as they approach the end of their playtime.

When the time limit is set, a child will start seeing in-game notifications when they have 30 minutes left to play. Once the limit is reached, they will not be able to play until the next day or until a new window begins – unless a parent decides otherwise.

Their time will be tracked playing both Epic Games-made Fortnite modes, such as Battle Royale and Lego Fortnite, and creator-made ones built with the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).

Time control limits work across consoles and devices. Additionally, parents can see how long their kids have been playing or when they were granted extra time via a Time Reports dashboard.

The new tools add to over a dozen parental controls available on Fortnite in a push to better protect its underage fans.

In 2022, Epic Games agreed to pay $520 million in penalties over children’s privacy violations and deceptive practices in what the Federal Trade Commission described as “record-breaking settlements.”
