How to play

Wordle isn’t as complex as some of the other New York Times games, such as Spelling Bee and Sudoku.

Sometimes, you’ll just get lucky. Other times, you’ll need to access your mind's built-in dictionary to complete the task.

The rules:

Think of a five-letter word and press enter to start.

Complete the puzzle using the color-coded letters (green, yellow, and grey) and figure out the five-letter word.

You have six attempts to solve the puzzle.

Wordle’s origin story

The game was created in 2013 by Josh Wardle, a Reddit employee who created the prototype ‘Wordle’ based on his last name.

The project was abandoned until 2021, when he decided to finish this game for his partner.

During the pandemic, the pair supposedly reviewed the game and reduced the word list from 12,000 five-letter words to just 2,500.

The game was published on a freely accessible website, and players grew from 90 to 300,000 in a matter of months.

In 2022, the New York Times announced they had bought Wordle for an unknown price.
