DiDi Global, the multi-app transportation platform, said its ride-hailing application in China experienced a "systems malfunction" Monday – leaving millions of riders in the lurch.
Driver and passengers in several major cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, complained about the app breakdown around 10:30 p.m. local time (14:30 GMT) Monday evening.
DiDi Global responded to the disgruntled posts on its official Weibo social media account soon after announcing the system-wide malfunction.
The company apologized for the outage – which left users unable to book rides for over an hour – and said it was urgently trying to resolve the issue.
DiDi Global is China's largest ride-hailing company, servicing a daily average of 31.3 million people in the third quarter alone.
Weibo's time-stamped posts, with user locations, showed the outage spanning numerous provinces, from eastern Zhejiang to northern Jilin.
By midnight, the DiDi-Rider app was allowing users to make bookings, but slow-downs and intermittent issues continued to show extra-long wait times for riders.
Besides its transportation app, the global mobility platform also has apps for food delivery, intra-city freight, automobile and financial services.
Headquartered in Beijing, the company has over 550 million users and tens of millions of drivers in over a dozen countries, including Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and Japan, according to its website.
In 2016 DiDi Global bought out China Uber, and more recently expanded its transportation services to Africa and Russia.
Last summer, the Chinese government fined the company over $1 billion for network security and data protection violations after a year-long investigation by the nation's cyberspace administration agency.
