Reddit users complain that app is down for thousands

Reddit went down for tens of thousands of users in the US and beyond on Thursday afternoon with no explanation from the social media company.

Internet monitoring site Downdetector shows Reddit users began reporting issues at about 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time, with its peak downtime at about 3:45 p.m.

More than three-quarters of at least 60,000 users reported having issues with the app itself, while another 22% of users said they were having trouble with the website.

This is the fourth time the social news and entertainment platform has acknowledged problems in the past six weeks. According to its social media, the platform reported other outages on August 6th, August 13th, and August 28th.

"I’m not able to comment on posts, can’t see my posts nor my notifications, glad to see it’s not me and that I’m not going crazy," a UK user named 'Steven' posted on the detection site about 7:30 p.m. local time in Britain.

"Total down time was about 1 hour and 45 minutes," another Reddit user said, clocking the outage.

When Reddit is down, where can users go to post their comments and find out more? The platform formally known as Twitter of course.

On X, Reddit posted this update on the outage, first stating the “We are currently investigating this issue,” followed by another post stating, “We have identified the underlying cause of the issues and have rolled out a fix."

Reddit’s last post in the thread simply states, “The issue had been resolved,” with no other explanation.

Close to 45,000 users in the US, nearly 5,000 in Canada, and another 9,300 users in the UK reported problems before the app and website outage appeared to have started winding down for users.

By 4:45 p.m. ET it seems the issue, which Reddit identified as a “Degraded Performance,” has been now settled.
