Wix is taking down Russian users and websites

Wix is blocking Russia-based users before new sanctions on the country’s IT sector take effect.

On Tuesday, the Israeli IT company announced that, due to new regulations, Wix will no longer “be able to support services for residents of Russia.”

The web development company, with around 243 million users, will block and restrict access to all Wix accounts, both free and premium, and take down all sites belonging to the account owner.

The announcement comes before the new restrictions imposed by the US Treasury and State Department will take effect on September 12th.

“As a result of the new regulations, we are required to restrict access to Wix services for Russian residents from September 12th, 2024, and block their accounts. From this date onwards, you will no longer be able to access your Wix account or any services we provide,” writes the company on its support page.

New restrictions targeted multiple IT services, particularly those related to enterprise management and design software.

These sanctions also impact services like computerized maintenance management systems and product lifecycle management, with limitations on exports, re-exports, and the transfer of this software to Russia or Belarus. The new sanctions are part of broader measures aimed at reducing Russia's access to technology essential to its economy.
