Snowboard manufacturer Burton hacked in sophisticated cyberattack


Sporting goods company Burton, which specializes in products aimed at snowboarders, has reported that a “sophisticated cyberattack” back in February 2023 affected 5170 individuals.

The Burton Corporation confirmed the number of affected individuals to the Maine Attorney General. The hackers have obtained names or other personal identifiers in combination with Social Security numbers.

“On or about February 11th, 2023, Burton experienced a disruption to certain computer systems following a sophisticated cyberattack,” the firm explained.

Burton provided written notice of this incident to the additional 41 Maine residents, the filing dated February 7th, 2024, reads.

This is the third breach notification on the same cyberattack. Initially, the reported number of affected individuals stood at 737.

Last year, the external breach caused a system outage affecting business operations, as Burton was unable to process online orders for a while.

​It's unclear who is responsible for the cyber incident as the winter-gear company did not provide more details.

“The investigation identified a limited number of files and folders as potentially accessed or taken by an unknown actor,” the firm’s letter to affected individuals said.

Burton is providing access to credit monitoring services for one year at no cost for affected individuals.
