Among many measures that help fight against cyber threats, there are a few crucial ones that can hold everything together. One of them is being aware of online dangers and sharing the knowledge with others.
Digitalized company’s data now is rather a casualty and the level of accessibility to it steadily increases. On one hand, it’s changing our lives allowing us to work from anywhere, but, on the other hand, the access is wider for cybercriminals as well.
Cybernews has reached out to Iban Fernandez Martin, the CTO of Copia Nube, to discuss the importance of responsible perception of Cloud backups.
Tell us about your journey. How did the idea of Copia Nube originate?
Nowadays, all the information that a company handles is computerized. This makes it critical for businesses to back up such information and ensure it is always available.
Until relatively recently, companies made physical backup copies locally, that is, they copied their information into various servers that were physically located on the company premises. With the outbreak of attacks on some companies by cybercriminals with crypto locker viruses, companies have become aware of keeping their information safe by outsourcing cloud backups.
Copia Nube is a company whose main objective is to offer a quality backup service to companies at a competitive price. Offering secure, reliable and easy-to-use backup solutions.
Another difference between Copia Nube and other backup companies is that Copia Nube ensures that backup copies are always available by reviewing the copies daily so that our clients never lose their data.
Can you introduce us to what you do? What are the main challenges you help navigate?
We are dedicated to cloud backups. Above all, we give support and service. We review our clients' backups every day so that the day our clients need to recover their data they don't have any problems.
The Copia Nube cloud backup solution has the following technical characteristics:
Web Access. In addition to the application, via the web, by accessing with a username and password, various procedures can be carried out, including recovering data, accessing backup reports, or consulting the storage volume.
Automatic copies. The Cloud Copy solution allows you to easily configure copy plans that allow you to automate backup copies.
Incremental copies. Incremental backup is a feature that scans your files, looking for changes that have occurred (new and modified files) so that only those files are uploaded to your storage.
Data restoration. Restore Wizard is the one that restores files in Cloud Copy backup. In a very intuitive way, the user can specify the type of data to restore (files, images, databases, etc.), the version that they want to recover and customise many other aspects.
CloudCopy Security. Copiague solutions implement authentication and control mechanisms to guarantee data security.
Encrypted backup. To prevent the confidentiality of the information from being compromised, the Cloud copy solution has implemented security mechanisms such as automatically encrypting backups, 256,128 or 64-bit client-side encryption, secure backup data transfers with SSL and many others.
Copy of Open Files. Allows files opened via VSS to be copied to the same machine where the copy agent is installed.
Copy shares. Copies network locations, including shares, NAS devices, and drives.
Storage limit. You can set the cloud storage limit so that the backup will stop before exceeding it.
Secure file storage. The solution allows encrypting the stored files, giving the necessary options to activate encryption, choose the encryption algorithm you want to use and specify the key to encrypt the files.
Daily copy monitoring. Every day, our support team reviews all copies. In the case that the copy is not made correctly on two consecutive days, we will contact you to solve the problem. In this way you will not have to review the backup copies, we do it for you so you can save a lot of time and money. (It is a service included in the price that the client values very positively since nobody offers it).
What are the advantages of storing data in the cloud over physical data storage?
Backup copies in the cloud are an external and independent service regarding the equipment that we use. For example, a user can normally use a smartphone or a computer and then have this cloud service to save important files.
The main advantage is its accessibility at any time and from anywhere. Its main advantage over local copies is that you can access your files regardless of where you are. Even if you are on vacation, in another country, in another place.
Another of its main advantages is also related to viruses. In the case of backups made in the cloud, all the information is protected against a virus on the responsible party's computer or any natural disaster. It is peace of mind because by choosing this method you will know that none of this will let the information you have in a safe place get lost.
There is also the benefit of file synchronization. For example, if you're working on a document and you make changes to it, only the new changes will be synced and saved. You will not have to save the entire document again, as you would have to do locally.
This is the reason why it is a popular method. However, it is always advisable to use different options, to cover your back more and avoid data loss.
Have you noticed any new cyber threats emerge as a result of the recent global events?
Today the attack with ransomware viruses and the theft of information is one of the biggest concerns of companies, a risk that, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, has been aggravated. In fact, according to an article in the Ser chain, nine out of ten companies have suffered a cyberattack.
Some of the attacks on companies and administrations published in the press are:
-Public State Employment Service (SEPE) was infected with the Ryuk ransomware virus and its computer system was paralyzed for days.
-Iberdrola suffered a cyberattack that exposed the data of 1.3 million customers
-The city council of Gijón suffered a cyberattack that forced citizens to carry out certain procedures in person.
In your opinion, what are the biggest mistakes companies tend to make when it comes to handling sensitive data?
The most common mistakes when making backup copies are:
1. Not taking into account the frequency of backups
2. Making copies of infected files
3. Saving copies only on physical devices
4. Not having enough disk space
5. Copying all files instead of just the modified ones
6. Always carrying backups with you
7. Not checking the status of the backup
Many companies have recently chosen cloud solutions as a way to enhance security. Are there any details that might be overlooked when making the switch?
We give a complete service. We help the company from the beginning so they don't have to worry about anything. We remotely install and supervise that everything is correct.
In addition, the Copia Nube software has some technical characteristics that facilitate the modernization, automation, and optimization of information maintenance:
- Protection against Virus Ransomware.
- Compression of the data so that they take up as little as possible.
- Block backup.
- AES 256 encryption.
- Copy Open Files.
- Copy share.
- Storage limit.
- Copy of files, Images, and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Local copy and Cloud.
- Mail notifications.
- Web Management and Monitoring.
- Comply with the RGPD by complying with the RGPD both the software and the contracted data centers whose location is within the European Union.
Besides quality data backup and cloud solutions, what other security measures do you think should be adopted by every modern company?
First of all, keep in mind that some companies pay a ransom when faced with ransomware. This is a terrible figure since the key is to make the economic investment in cybersecurity, to correctly invest each euro.
Therefore, to make the right investment, companies need to know how they could protect themselves from a ransomware-type infection. These are our tips:
Avoid using old devices
Update the software whenever there are new versions
In some cases, updates are to add new features, but in other cases, they exist to protect against the latest vulnerabilities.
Have the latest security patches in browsers
Have a backup plan
Install anti-ransomware software
Talking about individual users, what personal cybersecurity tools do you think everyone should implement?
The fact that those people who are responsible for the organization and the workers themselves are aware of the main vulnerabilities that exist, is a way of fighting ransomware. Keep in mind that attackers know how to get into computers, so knowing how to detect a possible attack attempt before it occurs allows you to stay one step ahead and alert the company to follow a series of practices. This is:
Avoid clicking on dubious sites
Avoid downloading files that you don't know where they come from
Do not reveal personal data if you are not sure who is behind it
Do not use unknown USB
Do not use public WiFi
Following these recommendations is how you can try to be one step ahead of the attacker, so as not to fall into the trap and not manage to gain control of your computer.
