Jean-Gabriel Grivé, ARSKAN: “everything that concerns a change in the company is particularly difficult to implement”


The interoperability of all the technologies in a single space is the next major challenge for the digital world.

It’s never an easy task to accept change in the organization. Dozens of employees must take the time to learn and adjust each time new software is implemented. In some cases, even introducing simple cybersecurity measures like a password manager can be a tough challenge.

Yet, a single software application is only a minor change compared to introducing completely new technologies that offer a completely new digital atmosphere and possibilities. To learn more about emerging technologies, we had a chat with Jean-Gabriel Grivé, the Founder and CEO of ARSKAN, a 3D data visualization technologies company.

Let’s go back to the very beginning of ARSKAN. What has your journey been like over the years?

Entrepreneurship is a journey full of obstacles, especially when we have a new and innovative technology that can disrupt markets. I had to constantly adapt in agile mode, to build ARSKAN, which is a company with big technological locks. My first challenge was to surround myself with a team of engineers and doctors who are experts in this field. And developing a close relationship of trust with visionary beta testers.

Can you introduce us to your 3D visualization solutions? What fields are they mostly used in?

ARSKAN offers massive and complex 3D data visualization technologies for the web, accessible on all types of terminals (PC, smartphone, and VR headsets), requiring very little server resources, hardware resources, and low bandwidth consumption. ARSKAN’s visualization and transfer solutions are therefore economically viable and eco-friendly.

The technological solutions of ARSKAN are:

  • ARSKAN Codec (ACO), a progressive lossless compressor/decompressor of 3D meshes
  • ARSKAN MoveInside (AMI), a web viewer of 3D meshes and external data (IoT, AI, business applications, software, media…)
  • ARSKAN Silodata (ASD), an intelligent storage platform, with a system of rights and sharing, which provides access to AMI and ACO technologies

ARSKAN solutions can be integrated via CLI and packages, and are also accessible and testable in SAAS mode on an online demonstrator and via an API. With these products, ARSKAN offers a way to create real 3D digital twins, by making your data interactive, collaborative, and connected to your database.

Our users are mainly from the industry, cultural heritage, works of art, and construction, who are looking for solutions for maintenance, training, assistance, control, safety, guided tour, security, and mediation. But above all, anyone who wants to visualize and contextualize their digital twins in 3D.

What are the main issues associated with current 3D visualization technologies?

In the world, we are a small handful (4-5) working on the problem of massive 3D visualization without streaming on the web.

These problems are real technological obstacles that require a lot of research and development in the areas of display on all types of terminals, massive data transfer, optimization of server resources, and bandwidth savings.

How did the recent global events affect your field of work?

First, there are major world technology conferences (SIGGRAPH, EUROGRAPHICS...) and major players (such as the KHRONOS GROUPS, DTC...) that present the major trends in the visualization market resulting from scientific research. Our research work is part of these major technological trends and has a real added value compared to the proven scientific state of the art.

The COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown were real barriers that made us lose from 8 to 12 months on the development of our prototypes. Moreover, the instability in Europe and the world was a negative factor for the innovation projects of large companies. And in France, we had the presidential elections, which, as everyone knows, are periods when companies put their future strategic decisions on hold. The period, from 2 to 3 years, is not the most convenient for entrepreneurship.

Where can we expect to see 3D visualization solutions be used more widely in the future?

As Facebook announced recently, with the creation of its metaverse (web 3.0, will be a very virtual and 3D web) we seriously think that 3D visualization will be everywhere on social media and at the center of business and e-commerce tomorrow. The 3D visualization market is booming. All the forces in the presence (ex: GAFAM) are in the process of buying out companies in 3D, reorganizing their services, and launching technological projects to offer viable 3D visualization solutions (3D companies, software publishers...).

What other innovations do you hope to see become commonplace soon?

The biggest innovation is the interoperability of all the major technological movements and technological innovation in a single space. Basically, like the metaverse for the large public and the digital twin of BtoB: a unique virtual place able to make all technologies (IoT, AI, robotic, AR, VR, big data...) interoperable in a unique platform.

In your opinion, why do certain companies hesitate to implement new and innovative solutions, despite all the technological advancements available nowadays?

Everything that concerns a change in the company is particularly difficult to implement, and there is a strong cultural resistance to change in the company.

As the Hype curve (cycle for emerging technology by Gartner) shows, many innovative and disruptive technologies appear in new markets, but as history shows, only a few of these technologies will be viable and stand out from the crowd to become a norm or standard in their field. Companies, therefore, tend to wait to use a sustainable technology solution.

Are there any precautions or security tools that you think need to be taken in this age of ever-changing technology?

The interoperability of all the technologies in a single place will create a strong interest in cyber criminality. This space will have to be highly protected against this type of attack. In addition to this cybersecurity aspect, there is an issue not to be forgotten: the ethics of all these technologies and the relationship between man and machine.

Would you like to share what’s next for ARSKAN?

Our major projects are the industrialization of our research and development work, recently published at the EUROGRAPHICS 2022. This work will allow us to surpass all the current performances of ultra-massive data visualization, such as buildings, factories, industrial installations, and even entire cities that will become, visualizable, exploitable, and shareable.

To do this, we will have to structure a team at the international level to propose our technological solutions to the largest world. Moreover, we are preparing fundraising for September 2022, to support all these ambitions.
