Google introduces Gemini side panel for Google Docs, Gmail, and more

Google is incorporating Gemini into its tools for everyday use, such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more.

The Google Gemini side panel was promised on Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail during Google's annual developer conference.

With Gemini 1.5, users working on Docs will get help brainstorming, summarizing, and creating content. On Slides, Gemini can generate new slides and custom images and summarize presentations. Gemini will help users who utilize Sheets track and organize data, create tables, and generate formulas. Users will also be able to receive help with other specific tasks.

With Gemini on Drive, users can navigate through a number of documents faster, as AI can summarize various projects or retrieve certain facts.

The Gemini side panel also works with Gmail, helping users summarize a whole thread of emails, create an email by suggesting a possible response, and find specific information in the inbox.

The new side panel is available for Google Workspace customers with "work or school accounts through the Gemini for Google Workspace add-on, and to users on personal accounts through Google One AI Premium."

Users who have paid Google Workspace accounts don’t have to install anything, as “there is no end user impact or action required.”

To summon Gemini, users should click on the "Ask Gemini" sign next to the user's profile picture at the top right.
