Users say no to Netflix after co-founder endorses Harris

The streaming giant Netflix has experienced a wave of cancellations after co-founder and chairman of the company endorsed presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Netflix co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings seems to be a big fan of Kamala Harris. Not only did Hastings endorse Harris, but he also donated millions of dollars to her campaign.

Hastings even congratulated Harris in a post on X: “Congrats to Kamala Harris – now it is time to win.”

Unsurprisingly, Republican Netflix users weren’t happy, evident from the rate of cancellations that followed the endorsement.

Donald Trump supporters flocked to X to boycott the streaming giant. Many users expressed that they don’t want to pour money into a company that supports Harris’ campaign.

Bloomberg, which first reported the story, found that the rate of cancellations almost tripled after Hastings endorsed Harris, and users in the US canceled Netflix at a 2.8% rate.

However, Bloomberg said Netflix saw its largest spike in cancellations when news of Hastings's donation went public on July 26th, 2024.

While MAGA supporters tried to boycott Netflix, the cancellation spike only lasted a couple of days.
