Best VPNs to bypass YouTube TV location in 2022

YouTube TV is a top-rated streaming service, giving users access to 85 channels. Unfortunately, it’s only available in the US, thus you will find its content geo-blocked in every other country.

Luckily, there’s an easy way around this. All you need is a reliable VPN to bypass YouTube TV’s location restrictions. When you use a VPN to connect to a US server, you’ll be given a temporary US IP address, which will let you spoof your location and make YouTube think you’re in the United States. A VPN also comes with a whole host of other benefits, including encrypting your data and preventing throttling.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to use a VPN to watch YouTube TV from anywhere on some of the most popular devices, and we’ll recommend the best VPNs for YouTube TV.

Watch Youtube

Why should you use a VPN to watch YouTube TV?

YouTube TV is only available in the US, and even then, not throughout the country. This popular streaming service places geo-blocks on its content, so that it would comply with the copyright laws and distribution rights. If you’re visiting other countries or residing outside of the US, you’ll need a YouTube TV VPN to unblock it.

YouTube TV blocked

If you try to watch content on YouTube TV without a VPN, you’ll be blocked by the following error code: It looks like you're outside of the United States. YouTube TV is only available in the US.

A VPN will help you get around this by letting you connect to a server in the US. You’ll then be issued with a US IP address, which will trick YouTube into thinking you’re in the country and will therefore allow you to bypass YouTube TV’s location restrictions. For that, you can use NordVPN.

Keep in mind that some people use a proxy or other tools to bypass geo-blocks. However, these options are neither safe, nor reliable. Unlike proxies, a VPN routes your traffic through secure and encrypted VPN servers to ensure maximum protection of your data.

Likewise, if you want to bypass YouTube TV restrictions without risking your privacy, you should definitely pick a trustworthy VPN instead of other tools.

How we tested the best YouTube TV VPNs

Finding VPNs that would unblock YouTube TV may be hard when the VPN market is so wide. However, we paid and tested the services so you don’t have to. Here’s what criteria we used to test and rank these YouTube TV VPNs:

  • Streaming capabilities. We tested each provider out with YouTube TV and checked whether they can truly unblock the platform. While it took a couple of tries for some of them, all of the ones we provided are great VPNs for streaming YouTube TV.
  • Servers. The more servers and locations the VPN covers, the better chance for you to access YouTube TV with great speeds.
  • Compatibility. We know that users watch YouTube TV on different devices, so we handpicked those that support the most popular operating systems.
  • Simultaneous connections. Just like multiple users watch Netflix and its different libraries, YouTube TV is most likely not watched by you only. That’s why it’s crucial that a VPN offers multiple simultaneous connections.
  • Price. While expensive means high-quality, it’s not always the case with VPNs. We made sure to provide affordable options that provide the best value for your money.

Can I use a free VPN for YouTube TV?

Technically yes, you can use a free VPN for accessing YouTube TV, but we don’t recommend it. First of all, free VPN providers don’t have a source of income, so they may sell your data instead.

Second, because such VPNs are free, they have a limited number of servers and are usually incapable of accessing streaming services. Some of such VPNs can even be malware in disguise.

However, if you do insist on trying a free VPN for YouTube TV, we’d suggest giving a shot for reputable freemium VPN providers, including ProtonVPN or Atlas VPN. Of course, there’s no guarantee that they will be able to help you access YouTube TV because of a lack of servers.

Yet, the best solution for those on a budget would be trying out premium services using their free trials:

  1. NordVPN – this provider offers a free 7-day trial for Android. Luckily, after signing up, you can connect the VPN to other devices too. NordVPN also has a 30-day money-back guarantee. Premium plans start at $3.09/month, it has plenty of servers in the US and is great for unblocking YouTube TV.
  2. Surfshark – it has a free 7-day trial for macOS, Android, and iOS devices. If you’d like to try the full premium pack, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee available. This VPN will undoubtedly help you access YouTube TV and it has a massive server fleet. Premium plans prices start at $2.21/month.
  3. IPVanish – you can try this provider for free with its 30-day money-back guarantee, this is the only way to get an IPVanish free trial. With a month-long money-back guarantee and premium plans prices starting from $3.33/month, IPVanish will let you enjoy YouTube TV with one of the best streaming VPNs out there.

Can’t access YouTube TV with a VPN?

When you’re using a VPN but you still can’t access YouTube TV, you’ll most likely receive an error message, like proxy detected. There are a few reasons why your VPN might be not working:

  • YouTube TV can detect and block VPNs, so your VPN may not be able to unblock YouTube TV’s location restrictions.
  • YouTube may have improved its geo-blocks, so even if your VPN used to be able to unblock YouTube TV, it might now be blocked.
  • Your true IP address could be leaking.

Here are some tips on how to trick YouTube TV location to fix these issues:

  • Check that your server is based in the US.
  • Try a different US server.
  • Reach out to your VPN’s customer service team for help.

Have you tried everything and nothing seems to work? If so, then it might be time to upgrade your VPN to a better solution.

What Reddit users say about YouTube TV VPNs

When it comes to choosing services, Reddit users are a great source for information. After all, they use services daily and know best what works and what doesn’t. And when it comes to YouTube TV VPNs, Reddit makes one thing clear – YouTube hates VPNs, but don’t lose hope!

While some users were successful with some VPNs, many had trouble. However, it all comes down to one solution – changing servers until you find one that works. NordVPN users even contacted customer support to help figure out the servers that actually work:

YouTube VPN Reddit

Some Reddit users complain that even well-known VPNs on the market get detected by YouTube TV, such as ExpressVPN or Windscribe. Yet again, changing servers or using gps spoofing helped many of them.

channels list on Youtube TV

Here’s a list of most popular movies and TV shows that you can watch on YouTube TV:

If you want to find what else you could watch, visit YouTube TV website to find the latest information about currently shown content.

What’s also worth mentioning is that on top of basic channels that are included in the subscription, YouTube TV gives an opportunity to add extra channels: check the variety of additional platforms and individually get only the ones you like.

YouTube TV offers HBO, AMC+, Showtime, MLB.TV, NBA League Pass, and Cinemax among many others. The additional channels cost between $5 to $10 each with a few specific ones that might have a higher price.

Conclusion

If you want to watch YouTube TV from outside the US, a VPN can make this possible. It will let you connect to a US server, which will allow you to bypass YouTube’s geo-restrictions. A good VPN can unblock all kinds of content, so you’ll never run out of new shows to stream.

But a VPN will do so much more than just letting you access different content from around the world. It will also encrypt your data so that it remains private from cybercriminals, hackers, and other third parties. It can even help you avoid having your speeds throttled!

Our top recommendation is NordVPN. With over 5500 servers in 59 countries, features for streaming, and blazing-fast speeds, you’re undoubtedly going to be able to bypass YouTube TV blocks.

I use NordVPN, cleared my cookies/cache, and turned off location services on chrome (using my desktop) and it still detects that I'm using a VPN. Would love a workaround since this site is saying that NordVPN is the best choice.

Hi!

I'm sorry you're experiencing this issue. The workaround here would be to use NordVPN's obfuscated servers. To connect to them, go to settings > auto-connect > and turn off the option to choose the VPN protocol automatically. Then, choose OpenVPN TCP as your primary VPN protocol. Then go to advanced settings > turn on obfuscated servers. Come back to the main map, and under the specialty servers in the left-hand menu, obfuscated servers option should be visible. Choose a location and connect.

I hope this helps!

I travel between the US and Europe and it would be great if I could watch my YouTube TV content while on the road overseas. I haven't found anything that works reliably though. There are a lot of articles describing various tricks but in my experience nothing really works.

Edit to my first post. It does work if you turn off location services on device - this is separate to using the vpn. Smart people saying...well duh.

No, this doesn't work. Only national channels. Local channels, you are prompted to turn on the location gps on your phone or tablet. It's new, but that's what happens. You can get CNN, fox news etc using the VPN.

Hello! In this case, Surfshark VPN might help, as it offers a feature called GPS spoofing, which tricks apps into thinking you're physically located in another country.
