An anime artist has removed a piece of Harry Potter fanart from the social media site Bluesky following backlash to their reimagining of Draco Malfoy as a female character.
After fans kicked back, Japanese artist Yunayu apologized and subsequently deleted the drawing.
But then the artist reposted the Malfoy adaptation a day later to a more sympathetic reaction on X.
The visuals are part of an online phenomenon known as Malfoid, a viral Harry Potter fan-art trend that reimagines Draco Malfoy as a female anime-style character, typically retaining his blonde hair, bratty personality, and rivalry with Harry.
And the strong reaction on social media, comes in the wake of the author JK Rowling's strong opposition to certain transgender issues.
The Harry Potter author regularly posts about her objections to gender fluidity, including a lengthy X post in August this year.
The trend picked up traction in late September with a variety of spins on how Draco Malfoy looks, from drawings to short animation clips.
However, it’s Yunayu’s posts that have captured the most attention.

The term “Malfoid” combines Malfoy with “foid,” an internet term derived from “femoid” that is sometimes used derogatorily toward women.
And though the artist hasn’t overtly commented on gender politics, the reimagining of Malfoy in female form was what caused the backlash on the usually left-leaning Bluesky.
The artist's apology on Bluesky read “I only learned about the situation after I drew the fanart,” adding “I never intended to hurt or offend anyone with my drawings.”
The comments on Yunayu’s X art reposting were appreciative of the art and sympathetic to the cause.
One commenter speculated that it would have been great if the artist had held the fort and not deleted her Bluesky account, while another advised her to stand up to online harassment.
In August 2025, Bluesky suspended various trans authors over anti-JK Rowling posts, but it seems to be the case that these fan-art enthusiasts have found a safe haven over on X.
