Methodology
App Selection Criteria
All apps in this index meet strict AI-core functionality requirements. We track only apps where AI is the core product, not platforms that added AI features as enhancements.
Inclusion criteria:
Within the top 100 AI apps by downloads globally (combined iOS + Android) in 2025
AI-first functionality: removing the AI would eliminate the core value proposition
Available on Google Play Store or Apple App Store
Data Sources & Limitations
Data sources: Google Play Store and Apple App Store for download numbers. Country population from multilateral statistical sources (e.g., UN, World Bank).
Known limitations:
Download numbers ≠ unique people (multiple apps, reinstalls, and device changes inflate totals)
App availability varies by country; not all apps are available in all markets
Desktop-first tools (especially coding assistants) are under-represented in mobile-only data
Countries lacking reliable AI app download data were excluded, resulting in a final sample of 64 countries.
