Frontier fiber internet: pros and cons

Fontier plans and pricing

The great thing about Frontier Internet is that it has a package for everyone. With six different packages to choose from, Frontier has you covered with excellent high-speed internet.

If you’re looking to maximize your connection speeds with low latency for gaming, Frontier has a rapid 7Gbps package available. But if you just want access to the internet for a small household, you can get an affordable and reliable 200Mbps package for just $49.99/month. All packages from Frontier include a Amazon eero 6+ router.

Get the details on each of the six Frontier fiber packages below:

  • Fiber 200. The $49.99/month starter package is perfect for a household of three members or less. Reaching speeds of 200Mbps, this plan can handle up to 10 devices simultaneously. It’s ideal if you just need internet to stream or work from home at an affordable price.
  • Fiber 500. The Fiber 500 package is Frontier's next step up the product ladder, priced at $44.99/month. This package is best for households with up to five members and can easily handle up to 20 devices. If you stream from multiple TVs at once, run home security devices, and make conference calls from home, this package would be ideal. As an extra add-on, you can include YouTube TV for $10/month. It’s worth noting that expert installation, usually priced at $100+, is included in this package.
  • Fiber 1 Gig. On the third tier of Frontier’s product range, you’ll reach speeds of 1Gbps for $64.99/month. These speeds are ideal for gaming and streaming in incredible 4K quality on multiple TVs simultaneously. You won’t have any issues with connection speeds for daily needs. You also get the same YouTube TV add-on and expert installation as in the previous package.
  • Fiber 2 Gig. The Fiber 2 Gig package, which comes at $99.99/month, boosts your connection speeds to 2Gbps. This package is ideal for large households or businesses with six to 10 people and up to 30 devices using the connection at the same time. You’ll be able to work online, stream in 4K, run smart home devices, and game online all at the same time with this package. In addition to YouTube TV and free installation, users get a $200 Visa reward card.
  • Fiber 5 Gig. Running at 5 Gbps and priced at $129.99/month, the Fiber 5 Gig tier is perfect for an “uncompromisingly fast connection.” Essentially, you could run more than 50 devices on this connection without running into any issues. With this package, Frontier also throws in an upgraded router, the eero Max 7, to boost the connection coverage around your home.
  • Fiber 7 Gig. I don’t think any home truly needs a 7Gbps connection, but if you want the best possible speed in Frontier’s product range, this is the package for you. Frontier gives you two Eero Max 7 routers with this package, extending your Wi-Fi range up to 2,500 square feet, perfect for larger homes or reaching outdoor areas.

Frontier fiber availability

Fiber infrastructure is still growing rapidly all over the United States. Initially, Frontier only had fiber availability in a select few states, including California, Florida, and Texas. However, due to popular demand, it is growing at a much faster rate. Now, you can get Frontier across 25 different states. Check out the screenshot below for the full list of states where you can get Frontier.

Even if you’re living in one of these states, always remember to check the status of the fiber infrastructure in your immediate area. Fiber runs through tiny cables underground, and these need to be installed before you can get a fiber service to your home. If your area doesn’t have fiber infrastructure yet, you’ll need to wait for it to be rolled out first.

Best Frontier internet deals

Not only does Frontier have excellent fiber internet for your home, but you can also get some sweet deals if you know where to look. First, Frontier offers a couple of add-ons to its standard packages, which are always worth considering.

If you’re going for the entry-level package, you won’t get any benefits. But every package above that gets a free expert installation worth $100 added on. Every package except the entry-level and the top-tier Fiber 7 Gig also gets a $10 discount per month on YouTube TV. The Fiber 2 Gig package gives you the most rewards, offering you a YouTube TV discount, free installation, and a $200 Visa Rewards Card.

If you’re looking for a bundle deal, you can get the Frontier Internet and Home Phone deal for $74.99 per month which includes a landline and the entry level Fiber 200 package. For low-income households, Frontier offers a discount through the Lifeline Program.

Fees

If you’re going with Frontier, there are some important fees to keep in mind. While your equipment rental is “free,” it is included in your monthly cost. If you don’t return the equipment when you cancel with Frontier, you’ll be charged $400. There’s also a $100 early termination fee if you cancel your service within the first 12 months. Make sure to complete the entire 12 months before you cancel your plan with them.

How to find the best Frontier deal

If you want to get the best possible deal with Frontier, I've found a few tricks to squeeze out a couple of extra dollars.

First, sign up for Auto-pay and a Paperless Bill to reduce your monthly bill by $10. Next, make sure to choose the plan that you need: don’t opt for a connection speed that’s too fast for you to use its full capacity. Make sure to choose the right package so you’re not overpaying.

Second, make sure to use the perks of your Frontier package to save money in other areas, whether that’s the Visa Rewards Card or the YouTube TV discount.

Frontier DSL internet service

Alongside its fiber offering, Frontier also provides DSL internet. For $64.99, you’ll get DSL internet with no data caps or overage charges. It sounds like a good deal, but Frontier doesn’t mention the connection speeds you’ll get from this package. This means you could be stuck with internet that struggles to load up an Instagram Reel in under a minute.

Plus, this package comes with an early termination fee, so if the connection speed and quality are truly terrible, you’ll be stuck with it unless you’re willing to pay the cancellation penalty. Overall, it seems like a risky option compared to their fiber packages. If you’re looking for additional options, I would recommend looking into some 5G internet providers.

How does Frontier compare with competitors?

When it comes to fiber internet, Frontier is one of the key players on the market. Their wide range of tiers in terms of pricing and connection speeds is excellent. With Frontier, you have more flexibility and choice, which gives you the freedom to choose a plan that works best for you.

While Frontier might not be the cheapest or have the fastest connection speed compared to its competitors, the flexibility of its product tiers often draws customers in the most.

However, it's important to remember that fiber infrastructure is still growing. Frontier might be available in one area while its competitors aren’t. This is something to keep in mind if you’re looking for a fiber connection to your home. Before comparing Frontier directly to its competitors, check which ones are available in your area.

Optimum is the closest rival to Frontier when it comes to connection speed. Frontier’s top-level package hits speeds of 7 Gbps, while Optimum can go up to 8 Gbps. However, most households don’t need internet that fast.

Frontier fiber internet: our verdict

Frontier is a great option for fiber internet. Their wide range of product tiers gives you more flexibility in choosing a package that best suits your needs. Compared to other providers, Frontier is one of the best in the business, and its coverage across the United States is excellent for a fiber provider.

However, customers have some complaints. Many have complained about the customer service specifically, but that’s been a recurring theme when it comes to fiber internet. As for the speed and reliability, once you have it up and running, that’s been nothing short of excellent.

Frontier is worth choosing if they service your area, but always make sure to select the right package based on your household’s size and needs.
