Is NordPass safe?
Yes, NordPass is safe to use. It’s based on a zero-knowledge architecture and employs the advanced xChaCha20 encryption algorithm, whereas other password managers use the slightly less secure AES-256. Furthermore, NordPass regularly undergoes independent security audits to verify the integrity of the infrastructure and security measures.
End-to-end encryption
End-to-end encryption ensures that only you and the server can read or decrypt your data. When you store something in the vault, it's encrypted on your device and can only be decrypted by the server. This means that even if someone intercepts the message, they won't be able to read it because they don't have the decryption key.
NordPass uses XChaCha20 encryption to secure your data. This modern and secure encryption algorithm ensures that your passwords and sensitive information remain protected.
Independent audits
NordPass passed the System and Organization Controls (SOC) 2 Type 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 audits in 2022 and 2023. Type 1 evaluates how well an organization's controls are designed and documented based on trust principles. Meanwhile, the Type 2 demonstrates the effectiveness of the security measures.
SOC accreditation is like a confirmation that NordPass has the necessary measures to protect your sensitive information. Because of that, you can rest assured your passwords are safe.
Zero-knowledge architecture
The zero-knowledge architecture means that NordPass staff can't see your data, as all your information is encrypted on your device before it reaches their servers. This ensures that only you, with your master password, can decrypt and access it.
However, remember that if you forget your NordPass master password, you could lose access to all the data in your vault. The only two ways to unlock it are to set up a recovery option in advance or to remember your password.
NordPass security features
NordPass has every essential security feature you expect from a password manager, such as a password generator, autofill, instant login, and password import/export. Additionally, it offers even more advanced features like passkeys, secure password sharing, data breach monitoring, and live text scanning.
Here’s the complete list of features NordPass offers, as shown in the table.
Feature | What does it do |
Password Generator | It generates passwords based on the parameters you set. |
Password Health | It scans your passwords for vulnerabilities, identifying weak, reused, and outdated passwords. |
Data Breach Scanner | It checks if your saved passwords have been exposed in known data breaches, helping you maintain security. It also includes custom monitoring, breach categorization (resolved/unresolved), and email alerts for admins. |
Passkeys | It replaces passwords with secure, user-friendly login methods that work across devices, eliminating the need to remember complex passwords. |
Emergency Access | This feature grants a trusted person access to your vault in case of an emergency. |
NordPass Authenticator | This is a feature for Business plan users. The Authenticator generates one-time codes for two-factor authentication (2FA), adding extra security to your account. It also supports TOTP code autofill on desktop extensions. |
Secure sharing | It allows you to safely share passwords or sensitive information with trusted people, ensuring it stays encrypted and private. It also supports CSV file sharing with other providers. |
Instant login | This feature allows you to log in with a single click. |

Email masking | This feature creates temporary, anonymous email addresses to protect your actual email from spam and preserve privacy when signing up for online services. It is activated organization-wide via the Admin Panel. |
Security dashboard | This feature, available for Business Plan users, enables admins to access detailed insights into the organization's password health and data breaches. |
NordPass integrations | The NordPass Business plan allows you to connect and use NordPass with other apps and services. It is compatible with major ID providers, such as Entra ID, MS ADFS, Okta, Google Workspace, Vanta, Splunk, and ConnectWise PSA. |
Threat Prevention Prompts | It alerts when visiting sites with weak passwords or unresolved breaches. |
I tested every NordPass feature under various conditions to evaluate how well they work on desktop, mobile, and browser extensions. Below are my detailed reviews of each main feature.
Password Generator, autofill, instant login, and passkeys
I found the NordPass Password Generator very helpful. It allowed me to choose the desired length for my password and offered a variety of other customization options, including the ability to include numbers, symbols, and uppercase/lowercase letters.

To test it, I made a new Facebook account. It asked me to create a password that was at least 6 characters long, including numbers and symbols. However, NordPass generates passwords with a minimum of 8 characters, as 6-character passwords are considered too short by today’s standards.
I selected my preferred password length and enabled digits and symbols, easily meeting Facebook's password requirements. I also discovered another handy feature: the ability to generate passphrases instead of random characters. I found this incredibly useful, as passphrases are much easier to memorize.
Once I was happy with the output, I saved the password to my NordPass vault by clicking the + button, and that was it.

NordPass also offers an autofill function. To use it, I first had to install the browser extension on my desktop, and once that was done, I could start using it immediately.
During testing, my experience was great. NordPass automatically filled in passwords wherever I attempted to log in. However, NordPass was more basic compared to RoboForm's form-filling feature, which allows autofilling all sorts of information, including credit card and other personal details.
Additionally, NordPass can store, create, and use passkeys instead of traditional passwords. I could use it to log in to websites that support this feature. Also, If you don't like passkeys, you can use your biometric data instead to verify your identity.
During my testing, passkeys worked smoothly. I created an account on a site that supports passkeys, and NordPass generated two passkey versions: a private one, saved and encrypted on my device, and a public one, stored on the website's servers.
When I logged in, I simply entered my account name and used my phone to confirm the login with my passkey. I was logged in immediately.
I also tested NordPass’s instant login, and it worked as expected. The credentials autofilled instantly, and I logged in within seconds without needing to type anything manually.
Sharing and storing passwords and other information
NordPass provides a secure way to share passwords with multiple users, which we frequently use at Cybernews. We constantly need various tools for our work, so we share our accounts. However, if we did it by just copying passwords, that would be a significant security risk. That's why we only share passwords with this feature. To see what logins you have access to, search for the Shared Items menu button.

Meanwhile, if you want to share a password, select it from the main menu and type in the recipient’s email address. After that, it’ll encrypt and send the password to that user. However, the recipient must use NordPass to access those shared credentials.
When I was testing the password-sharing feature, NordPass first asked if I would like to give the recipient full or limited access to the shared password. Limited access lets the recipient use the shared data but not edit it, while full access gives the recipient the full right to edit it.
Additionally, even if NordPass is password-focused, you can securely share other data. To do that, I went to the Secure Notes tab in the main menu, typed in a security code, and shared it via a generated link. I could also choose the link expiration time, either 24 hours or immediately after the recipient reads the message.

Additionally, the content of the message will be encrypted. So, your shared information is secure, and only you and the recipient will know what content was shared.
Overall, I enjoyes the NordPass' password-sharing functions. They were easy to use, and I appreciated being able to choose the level of access for the recipient.
The only downside was that the recipient must also have a NordPass account. However, this requirement is common among other providers, such as RoboForm and 1Password.
Password Health and Data Breach Scanner
The Password Health is a NordPass feature available with the premium subscription. It checks passwords and informs about their state. It works by scanning all passwords for weak spots and then grouping the results into these categories:
- Weak passwords. These passwords are too short and are easy to guess or crack. They lack a mix of numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters, and symbols.
- Reused passwords. This tab shows the passwords used for multiple accounts. Using the same password across different sites increases the risk of losing more data if one account gets hacked.
- Old passwords. This section shows any password that hasn’t been changed for more than 90 days.
NordPass considers any passwords that fall under any of these categories weak and flags them as a vulnerability in your security. So make sure to check this tab regularly and maintain your data safety.
When I tested the Password Health feature, it found 2 weak and 3 old passwords in my vault. After I updated them, the report came back clear.

The NordPass Data Breach Scanner is another excellent in-built feature. It checks whether your passwords or other sensitive information have ever been leaked, and it’s available with Premium plans. The tool automatically compares items saved in your vault with information found on leaked databases. While I found using this tool extra simple, I liked that I didn’t have to run the scans myself. Unlike other password managers that offer on-demand scans, NordPass’s Data Breach Scanner is always on the lookout for leaked credentials.
The scanner is not limited to account credentials, and I could also check banking information. I was able to look for leaked credit card data that matched my last name and the last four digits of the card.

NordPass Data Breach Scanner also provides information about what type of data was compromised, when, and where. It then gave me recommendations on how to secure the affected accounts.
Overall, my experience with the Password Health and Data Breach Scanner was great. However, there's always room for improvement.
For example, the Password Health in NordPass only shows the strength of individual passwords and not my entire vault. Dashlane, on the other hand, provides an overview of my overall online security, which I wish NordPass included as well.
Emergency Access and authentication
Emergency Access allowed me to grant my closest contacts read-only access to my passwords, which I found very helpful in case I forgot or lost my master password. However, it's worth noting that Emergency Access is not available on macOS.
While I liked emergency access, it was basic. Keeper, for example, lets you designate five people to access your passwords. It also indicates how much time should pass before your vault is accessible to them. So, while the feature is quite similar, I found NordPass' version too simplistic.
When it comes to authentication, I noticed that biometric authentication isn't supported by default on desktop devices unless I connect an external fingerprint scanner. Once I did, I had to enable Touch ID with Mac, and on Windows, I had to use Windows Hello. However, the Linux app didn't support biometric authentication at all.

NordPass offers three personal plans – Free, Premium, and Family – each designed to meet different needs. Starting at $1.38/month, the Premium plan is a budget-friendly solution to secure one person’s online accounts. Additional features like Emergency Access, Secure Sharing, and Trusted Contacts make it easy to share sensitive information without compromising security. The Premium plan also includes online security features such as Password Health and Data Breach Scanner. At $2.58/month, the Family plan offers all the same features but for up to 6 people.
In addition, NordPass is one of the few premium password managers that offers a free version, providing basic protection for your login details. It uses the same advanced security measures and includes autosave and autofill features. However, you can only use it on one device.
In my experience, NordPass stands out with affordable pricing and advanced security. While I found 1Password more expensive and RoboForm (although cheaper) lacking some security features, NordPass strikes the perfect balance between affordability and the latest protection measures.
Subscriptions and refund policy
NordPass offers a variety of payment options, including credit and debit cards, Google Pay, PayPal, direct debit, and even cryptocurrencies. Users also benefit from a 30-day money-back guarantee for personal accounts and a 14-day guarantee for business clients. However, this guarantee only applies to your first purchase, and if you cancel after the renewal, you won’t be refunded for any recurring payments.
What I especially like about NordPass is that all its paid plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. It’s essentially a free trial – I can explore NordPass's premium features, and if I’m not satisfied with something, I can easily get my money back.

NordPass business case studies
Small to large businesses trust NordPass to secure their data, simplify password management, and streamline internal processes. Here are a few success stories.
Working at a large company such as Hostinger often means juggling tens of login credentials. Remembering them is impossible, so employees write them down on sticky notes, which anyone can see, increasing the risk of unauthorized access.
Introducing NordPass to Hostinger helped streamline the process of sharing login credentials within teams without having to reveal the password itself. This way, employees didn’t have to store the login details themselves. All they had to do was have NordPass on their computer and click Log In with NordPass.
Most importantly, Hostinger noted that the onboarding process was straightforward, even for such a large company. Onboarding over 900 employees was a breeze and the user-friendly interface made it easy to manage even for the less tech-savvy.
As a media publisher, Bored Panda is targeted by malicious hackers daily. This makes it crucial to secure credentials, stopping unauthorized access.
Prior to NordPass, Bored Panda stored its passwords in an Excel sheet and even shared them through the company’s messenger app, Slack. With over 100 accounts for YouTube alone, this was an inefficient way of managing passwords, let alone highly insecure.
Once implemented, Bored Panda found NordPass’ Groups feature particularly useful, and it quickly became the most used feature within the company. It allows managers to create new groups for a specific project or department, allowing access to sensitive information only for those in that group.
Esken, a mid-size aviation company that handles sensitive information daily, expects employees to regularly update their passwords and make sure they’re strong and unique. This puts an additional load on the employees – they have to worry about updating their passwords and then remembering those complex passwords.
With security at the forefront of Esken, it made sense to implement a password manager into the company. First, NordPass eliminated the risk of weak passwords. The Password Health feature notifies employees when it’s time to update their credentials and helps them generate complex passwords within seconds. These passwords are then stored in the NordPass vault, with employees only having to remember their master password to gain access to their accounts.
NordPass setup and compatibility
I tested NordPass on iPhone (iOS 15.0), MacBook Air (macOS Sonoma), Samsung (Android 11), and Lenovo ThinkPad (Windows 11) devices. The setup process was straightforward across all devices. The apps have a modern feel and are easy to use. I was concerned that the apps would be cluttered, considering the sheer amount of features. However, the features, such as secure sharing and emergency access, are integrated quite seamlessly into the user experience.
NordPass setup
I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to set up NordPass. While the steps might vary slightly depending on your device, NordPass provides helpful Getting started guides and 24/7 support if you ever need assistance. Here’s a quick walkthrough.
First, I downloaded and installed the app on my computer, launched it, and clicked Create Account. This redirected me to the Nord Account website, where I signed up.

Once I logged in to the NordPass app, I was prompted to set up a master password. You will use this password to unlock your password vault every time.
I also generated a recovery code as a backup in case I ever forgot my master password, which I highly recommend for peace of mind.
For an added layer of security, I set up two-factor authentication in the app settings. I also recommend configuring Emergency Access, which ensures I can recover my account if I forget my master password and recovery code.

With the security measures in place, I imported my saved passwords from other password managers and browsers – the entire process took just a few clicks.

For convenience, I downloaded the NordPass browser extension. It makes autosave and autofill much easier.

I also recommend exploring features like Password Health, the Data Breach Scanner, and email masking.
Before I dive deeper into different NordPass apps, here’s a quick summary of its compatibility:
Desktop app | NordPass is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems, and you can set it up on both desktops and PCs. The apps are very easy to navigate and intuitive, with a neat, user-friendly interface for rapid daily use. |
Mobile app | NordPass mobile app is compatible with Android and iOS devices. I found the app to be very simple to navigate and locate necessary features or vaults. |
Browser extension | NordPass works with all main browsers, like Chrome, Edge, and Safari. While the autofill function did not work perfectly, the NordPass app browser extensions worked smoothly overall. |
Web Vault | NordPass Web Vault is an app-free solution, as it works just like an app but is web-based. I found this tool very handy and effortless to use. |
NordPass customer support
If you run into any issues with NordPass, you can contact customer support via 24/7 live chat or email. I tried the live chat and was pleasantly surprised. The agent responded quickly and efficiently – my query was solved within minutes. Unfortunately, there’s no phone line.
In addition, NordPass has an extensive knowledge base, which includes FAQs, set-up guides, and step-by-step instructions. As I navigated the help center, I found it intuitive, and the answers were easy to find. The how-to guides also include helpful images and tips to make finding a solution even easier.
