NordPass is one of the most popular password managers on the market today. It was launched in 2019 by Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN. It’s not surprising that it was built with security and ease of use as top priorities. NordPass is one of the best password managers currently available on the market. It combines top-level security with ease of use and great extra features all at an affordable price.

Recent updates
In this update, I fact-checked the provider description, included insights on the latest NordPass features, and updated the UI images.

Who I recommend NordPass to

NordPass offers versatile solutions for different users. However, some types of consumers would benefit from NordPass more than others:

  • Individuals who, in addition to the highest level of security, also want to monitor their credentials for leaks on the dark web and use email masking to reduce spam and phishing attempts.
  • Families that want to share credentials quickly and conveniently between family members.
  • Businesses that prioritize granular access control over who is able to access what accounts in the company.
  • Users who want a free solution for basic needs, such as storing an unlimited number of passwords and autofill.

NordPass plans and pricing

NordPass stands out as one of the most affordable premium password managers on the market. With plans starting at just $1.38/month, it delivers strong value without compromising on core security features.

NordPass offers three personal plans – Free, Premium, and Family – each designed to meet different needs.

  • NordPass Free is the basic plan that gets you essentials at no cost. It includes a password generator, autosafe, autofill, MFA, and unlimited password storage. However, it’s limited to one user account.
  • NordPass Premium, starting at only $1.38/month, offers additional features, such as Data Breach Scanner, Password Health, NordPass Authenticator, File Attachments, Documents, and cross-sync across unlimited devices.
  • NordPass Family, starting at $2.58/month, includes everything in the Premium plan and supports 6 user accounts.

In addition to individual plans, NordPass also offers three business plans Teams, Business, and Enterprise.

  • NordPass Teams, starting at only $1.79/month, is tailored for small teams and supports 10 users. Among its many features, it offers credential management and sharing, MFA, SSO with Google Workspace, recovery of locked accounts, company-wide settings, and granular policies.
  • NordPass Business, starting at $3.59/month, adds extra features such as Password Health, Shared Folders, Group Management, Data Breach Scanner, and integration with Vanta.
  • NordPass Enterprise, starting at $5.39/month, gets you everything in the Business plan plus Shared Subfolders, user and group provisioning with Entra ID and Okta, Network Allowlist, Activity Log API, Sharing Hub, and integration with Plunk and Microsoft Sentinel.

Compared to any other password manager that I’ve used, the overall value of NordPass is hard to match. It offers high-quality products without compromising on features or security. Also, it’s way more affordable than other premium competitors like 1Password ($1.99/month) and Dashlane ($4.07/month). That is made possible because NordPass offers 2-year plans instead of the industry-standard 1-year plans. While that does require more commitment from the users, it’s a valuable tradeoff as this is how NordPass gains a massive advantage over its competitors.

NordPass security overview

Is NordPass safe? From my experience, NordPass is one of the most secure password managers currently available on the market. It’s based in privacy-friendly Panama, protecting your data from intrusive surveillance. Beyond that, it delivers all the essentials for rock-solid security, including end-to-end encryption, a zero-knowledge architecture, multi-factor authentication (MFA), and advanced security features like Email Masking and Data Breach Scanner.

NordPass employs a future-proof encryption and zero-knowledge architecture

NordPass uses the modern XChaCha20 encryption, which is as secure as the industry-standard AES-256. Yet, it’s faster and more efficient on a wide range of devices.

Additionally, like any other quality password manager, NordPass uses a zero-knowledge architecture. This means no one can see your data, not even the NordPass employees. Since the information is encrypted before it reaches servers, only you or the master password holder can decrypt and access your vault.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you forget your NordPass master password, you could lose access to all your vault data. To learn more, jump to the NordPass customer support section, where the agent confirmed to me that they don’t have access to your data.

NordPass has passed multiple independent audits

As of today, NordPass has passed two independent security audits, confirming its ability to protect sensitive information. It completed System and Organization Controls (SOC) 2 Type 1 audit in 2022 and SOC 2 Type 2 audit in 2023.

Type 1 audit confirmed that NordPass’ design and documentation are based on trust principles. The Type 2 audit verified the effectiveness of its security measures.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

MFA is a key layer of protection for any online account, and NordPass offers solid support for it. I found three setup options: an authenticator app, a backup code, and a hardware security key.

I personally prefer authenticator apps because they are the most convenient option. The setup with NordPass was quick and straightforward: with only a few clicks, I was able to add an extra security layer to my account.

NordPass Passkeys

NordPass also supports passkeys, which work as a replacement for the old username and password setup. Since there’s no actual password to steal, they are much harder to phish, making Passkeys a more secure option.

For me, passkeys are also more convenient and faster than typing a password. You just need to put your email and wait for the confirmation.

However, if passkeys aren’t something you feel comfortable trying just yet, you can continue using regular passwords and use Face ID, Touch ID, or Windows Hello to unlock NordPass. Either way works, and you can mix the two depending on the site.

NordPass Password Health monitoring

NordPass’ Password Health monitoring feature scans your login credentials to identify weak, old, or reused passwords. However, keep in mind that this feature is only available for Premium users.

The feature works by scanning all your passwords and grouping results into the following categories:

  • Weak passwords. This category includes short, easy-to-guess or crack passwords.
  • Old passwords. This section shows passwords that haven’t been used or changed for over 90 days.
  • Reused passwords. This category includes passwords used for multiple accounts.

NordPass considers these passwords weak and flags them as security vulnerabilities. So, it’s a good idea to regularly check this tab to maintain your data security.

I tested Password Health by intentionally adding a few unused accounts to my vault. I used a weak password across two accounts and also added an account with a password that hasn’t been changed for more than 90 days.

When I tested the Password Health feature, NordPass instantly identified all of them and categorized them as Weak, Reused and Old respectively. After updating the passwords, the report came back clear.

Data Breach Scanner

NordPass’ Data Breach Scanner checks whether any sensitive information, including your passwords, has been leaked. It automatically compares your vault items with information found on leaked databases.

One of my favorite things about the Data Breach Scanner is that it runs the scans automatically, acting as a live dark web monitor. It means that it continuously searches dark web sources, including combolists and malware logs, for leaked credentials. I liked how handy this feature is, as most password managers offer on-demand scans. But with NordPass, I could sit back and relax as it did the job for me.

What’s more, the scanner goes beyond account credentials. It can also detect leaked credit card data tied to identifiers like a last name and the last four digits of a card. The scanner also clearly shows what was exposed, when and where it happened, and offers guidance on securing affected accounts.

NordPass apps and ease of use

NordPass apps have a clean, minimalistic design, making them intuitive and easy to use. The apps are available across all major platforms, and I appreciated that the design stayed consistent across them.

Desktop appNordPass desktop apps are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The apps have a consistent interface across platforms and include the same advanced features.
Mobile appNordPass has apps for Android and iOS that are consistent with its desktop apps. The apps maintain the same features, but I found autosave and autofill less reliable than on a laptop.
Browser extensionNordPass works across all major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera. The interface mirrors the desktop app, and most features are available on the web version. Autosave and autofill can occasionally be inconsistent, but I found it common across password manager extensions.
Web VaultTo access your vault, it’s not necessary to download any apps or extensions. Just sign in to NordPass on its official site and enter the Web Vault. The only limitation is that advanced features are not available in this mode.

My experience using NordPass apps on both desktop and mobile was great. The apps are easy to navigate, making it exceptionally fast to find features. I didn’t experience any issues using it on mobile either. The buttons were responsive, and I didn’t get lost scrolling to find what I needed.

When creating an account, NordPass suggested a strong password, prompted me to save it, and then offered autofill for future logins, with all credentials stored in a centralized vault.

However, when using it on a desktop, I had to enter my master password in both the desktop app and the browser, which seemed redundant. Also, when using NordPass across devices, I missed the shared folder feature that 1Password has. It allows sharing an entire folder with a family member instead of sharing passwords one by one.

NordPass customer support

NordPass has an extensive selection of support channels, which include 24/7 live chat, email support, FAQs, set-up guides, and a general knowledge base.

To test the quality of NordPass’ customer support, I used their live chat and email options. I wanted to learn how NordPass handles account recovery in case a user loses access to their master password, and how it protects against unauthorized recovery attempts.

I was connected to an agent and received an answer in under 1 minute. The agent gave me an elaborate response and shared some useful guides.

Chat with a NordPass customer support agent

Next, I reached out to the support via email. I contacted them because I lost my master password. They replied within 6 hours of me submitting the request.

The agent explained that I could only recover my account with a recovery code or log in with biometrics if that option was enabled. Otherwise, I will have to reset my account, and all the items in my vault will be permanently deleted. This information only confirms that my data is not accessible to NordPass staff, and I’m the only one able to recover my account.

Overall, I was happy with the information and the quality of the support. Clearly, email is not the best option if you have an urgent issue, but their live chat responses were fast and on point.

How we tested NordPass

Together with Cybernews experts, I tested NordPass from start to finish, following our usual procedure for testing password managers. Here's what mattered to me most in the testing process:

  1. Security (35%). Security is the most crucial aspect of any password manager. I evaluated NordPass’ security measures, including its encryption algorithm, password hashing, MFA methods, and no-logs policy.
  2. Password generator and autofill (25%). This is yet another integral part of any password manager, which is worth paying attention to. I tested how these features work across different websites, apps, and platforms.
  3. Cross-device compatibility (20%). Many people use password managers across devices, so it’s crucial that it works seamlessly. I used NordPass on Windows, Mac, iPhone, and Android to assess its compatibility.
4. Password sharing (20%). This feature is especially important for families and businesses. I reviewed sharing options on both family and business plans hands-on to ensure they work as intended.

Final thoughts on NordPass

NordPass is one of the best password managers that I’ve used. It covers all the essentials, from XChaCha20 encryption and strong password generation to seamless autofill and secure storage. It also adds useful extras like a Data Breach Scanner and email masking for enhanced protection, without charging a premium price.

However, NordPass is not perfect. The desktop experience felt slightly less polished due to double login prompts, and it lacked folder-based sharing for families. Still, despite these minor drawbacks, NordPass delivered one of the strongest value-for-money packages the market has to offer.
