Meme coins are not just about fun and eye-watering profits. Haliey Welch, also known as the Hawk Tuah girl, has learned the hard way that they are more complicated than just making a viral video on YouTube.
On December 4th, the star of the viral video launched a meme coin on the Solana (SOL) blockchain, Hawk (HAWK), which has crashed by more than 90%.
Traders have accused the team behind the project of dumping their coins on the market. However, Welch's team claims they have "sold absolutely no tokens."
"Haliey's team has a 10% allocation, which is locked for one year and vested over three years. The rest of the tokens are distributed into different wallets according to the tokenomics," they said, promising more details and inviting the community to voice their concerns.
And the community did. The post on the X platform by the team was community-noted, meaning readers added important context to the post.
The note insisted that "the 'team' and insiders have actually been selling their token since launch."
"A majority have never purchased anything and have only sold the tokens they were given. [Haliey] is lying and will likely have to 'talk tuah' a judge about this," the community note reads, adding a link to a screenshot alleging that tokens have indeed been sold.
Welch herself also claims that the "team hasn’t sold one token and not one [key opinion leader] was given one free token."
This post has also been community-noted with the same message as mentioned above.
Meanwhile, according to the HAWK tokenomics, 10% of the token supply is allocated to Haliey herself, while the rest is divided among the community fund, reserves, as well as strategic and public allocations, unlocked during the launch of the coin.
At the time of writing, according to Bubblemaps, a blockchain visualization platform, a cluster of wallets allegedly controlled by Haliey's team owns 81% of the HAWK supply, which is 15 percentage points lower than a day ago.
