Two men behind the popular streaming service 247TVStream were indicted for peddling copyrighted content, netting several million dollars in the process.
Brothers Noor Nabi Chowdhury and Mohammad Rahman received a handful of charges for operating the streaming service, utilized to stream popular sports events such as NFL or NBA games. The pair charged users a $10 fee for copyrighted content they did not pay for themselves.
According to the US Department of Justice (DoJ), the illegal scheme earned the duo over $7 million, while the estimated harm to copyright owners surpassed a whopping $100 million. 247TVStream was displaying a “seized by the US Homeland Security” message at the time of publishing. Law enforcement authorities have also seized the servers that ran the service.
The pair is unlikely to avoid a real prison sentence, as US authorities charged the brothers with conspiracy to provide to the public an illicit digital transmission service, providing an illicit digital transmission service, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
The first charge may land them up to five years in prison, the second charge – up to 20 years, and the third one – a mandatory two years behind bars.
The American authorities have taken Chowdhury, a resident of Cheektowaga, New York, into custody. Meanwhile, his brother lives in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
