An Australian former professional Fortnite player has been accused of helping to steal $3.5 million via meme coin scams. The suspect claims that he's "innocent."
Independent blockchain detective ZachXBT has struck again with his investigation skills, this time alleging that the aforementioned former player, known as Serpent, was involved in the scams. They were executed by compromising at least nine accounts on the X platform and Instagram. According to the investigator, the proceeds were gambled at online casinos.
The crime has been tied to compromises of social media accounts belonging to McDonald's, Usher, Wiz Khalifa, SPX 6900, and others earlier this year. The compromised accounts were used to promote scam meme coins launched on the Pump.fun meme coin launchpad. For example, in the case of McDonald's, the scammers promoted the GRIMACE coin, managing to steal more than $690,000.
According to ZachXBT, Serpent also co-founded an NFT project, DAPE, in March 2022, tricking its users into giving up their money. In March this year, he allegedly launched another fraudulent project, ERROR.
"Serpent gambles millions of dollars on Roobet, Stake, BC Game, and Shuffle each month, frequently screensharing with friends on Discord," the investigator said, claiming to have obtained recordings of Serpent gambling where he inadvertently leaked multiple deposit and withdrawal addresses.
For example, on November 1st, during a screenshare, Serpent allegedly shared a $100,000 deposit and a $200,000 withdrawal.
ZachXBT claims that Serpent began panicking after being named on the investigator's Telegram channel. The accused former player has also deleted all his previous posts on X, posting "not involved" yesterday. In the comments, Serpent also replied, "I'm innocent," adding a broken heart emoji.
Meanwhile, according to the investigator, a detailed report was shared with a victim of one of the account compromises.
