Job scam nightmare: Chinese influencer hospitalized after disappearing in Cambodia

A devastating experience has left a 20-year-old Chinese influencer drugged and distressed as she recovers in a hospital in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Surnamed Wu, the former Douyin (Chinese TikTok) influencer, who has in excess of 24,000 followers, tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine, suggesting that she had been contaminated with substances.

Wu was admitted to the hospital on January 3rd, with medical teams finding severe conditions such as a lung infection, pleurisy, pleural effusion, urinary retention, and low protein levels.

Scattered incidents

The original premise was that the influencer had secured what she thought was a lucrative job in the service industry. However, it transpired that, along with her romantic interest with a local man ending, she had also been scammed by the recruiters. There is no confirmed link between these two incidents.

What is known, however, is that she became confined for several days but couldn’t remember the location. Prior to this, she had been evicted by her landlord and had even ended up homeless. Wu had also been turned away by several hotels.

These disjointed memories surfaced during a police interview on January 5th, in which Wu was reluctant to discuss the details of her employment.

The region is infamous for cyber scams, often luring workers into cramped conditions and forcing them to engage in duplicitous behaviour online.

What separates this case from many is that it was reportedly a service job that Wu was lured into.

Another mystery in the case is that Wu asked her family for $315 for leg treatment, just a day before she disappeared. However, soon after, relatives spotted online photos showing her homeless on Cambodian streets.

The police force from Fujian, China, has commissioned her mother to travel to Cambodia on January 6th in a bid to bring her daughter safely home.
