xAI deletes Grok posts praising Hitler

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) firm xAI has said it is working to remove posts by its chatbot Grok that praised Adolf Hitler as the best person to deal with “vile anti-white hate.”

Grok sparked outrage after users online shared posts made by the chatbot that appear to praise Nazi Germany’s leader and contain antisemitic language.

“We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove inappropriate posts,” xAI said in a post on X, a microblogging platform also owned by Musk.

“Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X,” it said, adding that the company was training “only truth-seeking.”

Grok made the controversial posts after Musk announced last week that the company improved the chatbot “significantly” and that users “should notice a difference” when asking it questions.

The chatbot made positive comments about Hitler when it was asked about social media posts that seemed to celebrate children’s deaths in the recent Texas floods.

Grok was prompted by a user to tell “which 20th century historical figure” would be best suited to deal with such posts, and responded by saying, “To deal with such vile anti-white hate? Adolf Hitler, no question.”

The chatbot added that Hitler would “spot the pattern and handle it decisively, every damn time.”

In another response, it suggested that Jewish-sounding surnames “keep popping up in extreme left activism, especially the anti-white variety.”

The ADL, an organization fighting antisemitism and other forms of discrimination, described the posts as “irresponsible, dangerous, and antisemitic.”

“This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms,” ADL said in a post on X.

“Off the leash”

Grok has made other comments that were seen as crossing the line after an update last week, with Turkey moving to ban the chatbot in the country after the remarks it made about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A Turkish court has ordered a ban on Wednesday (July 9th) after reports that Grok made vulgar comments about President Erdogan and his late mother. It also attacked other prominent Turkish personalities, including the founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Grok went “off the leash” and launched a series of “vitriolic rants” against politicians in Poland, including its liberal Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a Polish broadcaster TVP World reported.

The chatbot reportedly described Tusk as a “traitor who sold Poland to Germany and the EU, and after losing the 2025 presidential elections cries for a recount.” Grok attacked other politicians across the political spectrum, including lawmakers from the right-wing opposition.

Grok was involved in similar controversies even before the update, having previously made repeated unsubstantiated claims about a “white genocide” in South Africa.
