OpenAI’s chief communications officer is leaving the tech giant

OpenAI’s chief communications officer (CCO) is officially leaving the tech giant after working for the company for over four years.
Hannah Wong, OpenAI’s chief communications officer, says goodbye after seeing through the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 and various other milestones.
Wong said via LinkedIn that she has “decided it's time” to step back and move on to the next chapter.
“These years have been intense and deeply formative. I’m grateful I got to help tell OpenAI’s story, introduce ChatGPT and other incredible products to the world, and share more about the people forging the path to AGI during an extraordinary moment of growth and momentum,” Wong writes.
Wong thanked various people, including OpenAI founder Sam Altman, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, and CEO of applications Fidji Simo.
Altman and Simo said in a joint statement that Wong has “played a defining role in shaping how people understand OpenAI and the work we do,” according to WIRED.
Wong joined OpenAI in 2021 when the company was much smaller and less well-known.
The former CCO was considered by many to be an integral part of navigating what is now called “the blip,” where Altman was fired and subsequently rehired as CEO of OpenAI back in 2023.
Wong was appointed as OpenAI’s first CCO, which signalled a shift in the tech company’s attitude toward public relations and brand image.
OpenAI has faced much scrutiny for its handling of issues related to AI innovation. Wong was essentially a bridge between the public and the company.
Her job was to illustrate OpenAI’s operations, development, and research in such a way that the public would be able to understand.
Wong said in her LinkedIn post that Lindsey Held Bolton will lead the communications team in the meantime while Kate Rouch hunts for OpenAI’s next CCO.
Bolton is currently the head of public relations at OpenAI and has been with the company for over two years.
Previously, Bolton was the director of communications for Mark Zuckerberg’s tech company, Meta
