Hillary Clinton joins Bluesky amid Wisconsin election, gains 180K followers in one day

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton follows former President Barack Obama as the latest Democrat figure to open an account on Bluesky.

Clinton joins a growing list of Democrats now posting on the “billionaire-proof” social network, which is increasingly seen as an alternative to X, owned by Tesla CEO and President Donald Trump advisor Elon Musk.

“Hi, BlueSky [sic]. It’s Hillary,” the former First Lady said in her first post on the platform and later confirmed the account’s authenticity in an Instagram story and a post on X.

She said she joined Bluesky to “help get the word out” about the election in Wisconsin, where voters are heading to the polls on Tuesday, April 1st, to elect several officials, including a highly coveted seat on the state's Supreme Court.

Hi, BlueSky. It's Hillary. I've joined up here to help get the word out about an important election in Wisconsin tomorrow, and other ways to defend our democracy against those who think votes can be bought.

The race between conservative Brad Schimel and liberal Susan Crawford has become the most expensive judicial contest in U.S. history, with over $90 million spent so far, including $20 million from Elon Musk and associated groups.

Schimel is supported by Trump, while Clinton, Obama, and Democratic mega-donor George Soros back Crawford. The tight race could shift control of Wisconsin’s top court, which is currently held 4-3 by liberal justices.

In her Bluesky post, Clinton called for voters to “defend our democracy against those who think votes can be bought.”

At the time of publishing, she had nearly 183,000 followers on Bluesky. She is also active on X, where she has 30.6 million followers, and Instagram, with 6.3 million, among other platforms.

Other Democrat and left-leaning American politicians are present on the platform, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who became the first person on Bluesky with a million followers.

Bernie Sanders, Gavin Newsom, Elizabeth Warren, and Al Green are some of the others with the presence on Bluesky, which continues to attract users amid a perceived rightward shift of X under Musk.

While Bluesky has seen rapid growth in recent months, its user base remains a fraction of rivals like X and Meta-owned platforms, with X boasting 650 million monthly active users and Meta platforms reaching 3.5 billion daily active users.
