Users are not happy with Logitech’s recent idea to charge a subscription fee for using a computer mouse.
On Monday’s The Verge podcast, Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber introduced a new piece of hardware that the company’s innovation center is developing. Faber dubbed it the "forever mouse," claiming that users will never need to replace it.
It will be just like a regular computer mouse, but heavier and more expensive. Users might also be required to pay a monthly subscription fee for continuous software updates and services.
In a conversation with a podcast host, the CEO speculated that the "forever mouse" could be priced at $200, which is more expensive than a regular mouse. Alternatively, subscription payments could offset the cost of the mouse's hardware.
While the CEO has said that the company has not yet figured out the exact business model, she is “intrigued” by the idea. Users might not be as intrigued, with many already experiencing subscription fatigue from the numerous online services they have to pay for.
While Logitech has yet to announce the release of such a product, Reddit users have already expressed strong opinions about potential mouse subscriptions.

Many users find the concept of a mouse subscription absurd, with some calling to cancel Logitech, as “even considering the idea is offensive.” According to many, hardware should be a one-time purchase, and basic functionality and reliability should be standard in a premium product.
“F*** subscriptions to use hardware. F*** all subscriptions in general, but hardware ones have their own special place in hell,” a Reddit user emphatically stated.
“Nobody owns anything just pay a monthly fee to survive,” writes another fatigued user.
Some users expressed skepticism of the software updates that are actually needed for a computer mouse. “Software updates to do what? It’s a mouse. Move the cursor, right and left click, scroll. The software for that doesn’t need “updates,” writes a user, while another calls the subscription plan “an expensive, unnecessary contract with a greedy corporation.”
Some joked that ads are sure to come next. “Left click after this 30-second ad!” said one Reddit user.
“Please update the subscription plan for right-click functionality,” responded another.
