Scissor-maker Fiskars sliced by hackers

The Finnish consumer goods maker Fiskars Group has had its systems breached with thousands of users’ data exposed.

The company started contacting individuals impacted by the March 31st data breach. According to information the company submitted to the Maine Attorney General, attackers roamed Fiskars’ systems from March 31st till April 8th of this year.

The Finland-based company is best known for its iconic orange scissors. However, it also makes a wide variety of home goods. The company’s revenue for last year exceeded €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion), with nearly 7,000 staff employed.

The company’s breach notification letter says the attackers got their hands on individuals’ names and Social Security numbers (SSNs). More than 6,000 individuals were exposed in the attack.

Exposing SSNs pose severe risks to affected individuals. For example, attackers may utilise the data for financial fraud, such as setting up fraudulent financial accounts. Other malicious uses of exposed data could also include tax fraud and identity theft.

To mitigate some of the possible implications, Fiskars said it will offer complimentary 24-month identity theft protection service.
