Starlink just made its hardware free for 12-month subscribers – but you might end up paying more if you cancel early or move.
Starlink has announced that they are to waive the $349 hardware fee for a dish and router, and instead provide it for free.
The customer has a 30-day window in which to test the kit, and if they cancel within that time, then the kit can be returned for nothing, no service fees or hardware charges.
With this free hardware, there remains no change to the monthly subscription cost, which currently stands at $50 in the US and €50 in Europe.
However, as always, there is fine print to be read. If you cancel after 30 days, you’ll be charged up to $349 for a prorated hardware fee, and the same amount if you change address.
Also, you can be hit with a $100 demand surcharge in areas where demand for SpaceX is high, which in the past has been more frequent in areas in the southern and eastern US, such as Texas, Florida, Kansas, and Virginia.
The surcharge is a regional fee that is designed to manage network congestion.
Far-reaching strategy
The select regions that this offer is available in include the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
Nationwide coverage is available in most European countries. But in Croatia the offer only applies to the Starlink mini kit.
This is a significant offer from Starlink, as it lowers the barrier to entry for new users, and in turn makes the internet access more competitive in areas with limited broadband access.
Starlink's satellite service doesn’t rely on fiber optics or cables, and the usage of the equipment, especially given that free – with certain conditions – could foster economic growth, improve education and business opportunities.
By offering lower prices and a more extensive global reach, Starlink is positioning itself to surpass traditional satellite ISPs like Viasat and HughesNet, who have higher upfront costs.
