Former US president Donald Trump believes that his campaign was hacked by Iran.
On Saturday, Politico reported that it recently began receiving emails from an anonymous account containing documents from Trump’s campaign.
Throughout a couple of weeks, the sender – using an AOL email account and identifying as "Robert" – shared what appeared to be internal communications from a senior Trump campaign official. "Robert" claimed to possess various materials, from legal documents to internal campaign discussions.
When asked how they obtained the documents, the person responded: “I suggest you don’t be curious about where I got them from. Any answer to this question will compromise me and also legally restrict you from publishing them.”
The scope of the information obtained by the hacker is unclear. The campaign blamed the breach on “foreign sources hostile to the United States,” pointing to a Microsoft report released on Friday.
The report revealed that Iranian hackers had sent a spear-phishing email in June to a high-ranking official in a presidential campaign. Microsoft did not specify which campaign was targeted.
“On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a ‘high ranking official’ on the US presidential campaign in June 2024, which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a Vice Presidential nominee. This comes after recent reports of an Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump around the same time as the Butler, PA tragedy,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung told CNN.
“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” Cheung said.
At the moment, it's still unclear whether Iran was responsible for the hack.
Trump survived an assassination attempt in July. While there’s no evidence linking the suspect to Iran, CNN reported that the US received intelligence about an alleged Iranian plot against Trump. Iran has denied these allegations.
