Flipping the Script on Scammers: A Lithuanian Attorney Develops an App That Alerts the Victim's Family First

Responding to the global epidemic of SMS phishing (smishing) that costs consumers billions of dollars annually, Lithuanian Attorney at Law Mindaugas Urbonas has launched SOS Trust SMS. This innovative mobile application neutralizes social engineering attacks by transferring the critical decision-making moment away from the targeted victim and directly to their tech-savvy relatives in real-time.
Currently available globally in 10 languages, the app is designed to protect vulnerable demographics - particularly seniors and children - by deploying a localized, on-device safety net. As mobile-based financial fraud reaches unprecedented levels, SOS Trust SMS offers a paradigm shift: providing a critical second layer of defense centered on trusted human intervention.
"In my legal practice, I see too many individuals who have lost their life savings in minutes. The state and financial institutions fight the consequences, but rarely the root causes," says Mindaugas Urbonas, the creator of SOS Trust SMS. "While banks invest heavily in education, that education relies on the premise that people act rationally in a crisis. Professional scammers attack basic instincts—the panic of losing money. I realized that to protect vulnerable people, we need a technological failsafe that bypasses their panic and immediately involves someone with a clear head."
A New Layer of Defense Against AI-Driven Scams
The digital economy relies on seamless mobile notifications for banking, logistics, and state services, making the SMS inbox an increasingly attractive vector for malicious actors.
The growing threat is catalyzed by the accessibility of spoofing technologies and AI-generated scripts. While traditional security filters provide a crucial first line of defense, modern scammers continuously attempt to bypass them by cloning (spoofing) the phone numbers of innocent citizens or using Alphanumeric Sender IDs to impersonate trusted entities like National Tax Authorities, the Police, or major postal and courier services.
SOS Trust SMS addresses this challenge by utilizing a localized Zero-Trust approach that complements existing security measures. When a message arrives from an unknown number, a hidden number, or a spoofed institutional name that is not explicitly saved in the user's contacts, the system immediately sends an automated, silent SOS SMS to a pre-designated family member.
"This is a technological bridge between a vulnerable person and their protector," adds Urbonas. "When a scammer successfully breaches the victim's psychology, a 'hard' mechanism must trigger to buy time and call for help. A single timely phone call from a son or daughter instantly shatters the artificial panic created by the scammer."
Independently Developed to Solve a Societal Crisis
Unlike many cybersecurity startups, SOS Trust SMS was not born in a tech incubator, but was inspired by real cases in a law firm. Witnessing the devastating aftermath of cyber fraud in courtrooms, Urbonas recognized a glaring gap in the market: reactive legal measures were too slow and both emotionally and financially draining for the victims.
Determined to create a preventive tool, the project was independently developed to address the exact psychological vulnerabilities exploited by scammers. Recognizing that fundamental security should be accessible to everyone, the application is distributed completely free of charge to ensure it reaches those who need it most.
During a closed beta program, the app successfully detected multiple real-world spoofed messages — including impersonations of government tax agencies, police, and courier services. In each case, family members who received the SOS alert called in time and prevented potential fraud — before users had a chance to click a single link.
Privacy by Design: 100% On-Device Processing
Given the creator's legal background, user privacy and data protection were foundational to the app's architecture.
SOS Trust SMS operates strictly under a Privacy by Design framework. The application does not read, store, or analyze the content of personal SMS messages. It only scans the metadata—specifically the sender's ID—to verify it against the local address book.
All processing happens entirely on the user's device (On-Device Architecture). The app is never connected to cloud servers, and it does not transmit telemetry or user data to external databases. Neither the developer nor any third party has access to who is messaging the user, or what is being said.
The Future of Mobile Protection in the Android Ecosystem
As the market shifts toward more sophisticated mobile operating systems, developing reliable background infrastructure is key. Currently, SOS Trust SMS leverages the flexibility of the Android operating system to monitor incoming sender IDs.
The app is meticulously optimized to function seamlessly across the highly fragmented Android ecosystem, ensuring that life-saving background processes remain active and reliable across all device manufacturers.
With full support for 10 languages and a growing user base, SOS Trust SMS is setting a new standard for ethical, human-centric cybersecurity. As scammers continue to innovate, the app provides a timeless defense: the undeniable trust between family members.
