Artificial intelligence (AI) engineer was among the fastest-growing roles across labor markets examined by LinkedIn.
The role was among the fastest-growing in 15 of the 21 countries listed in Jobs on the Rise reports published by the professional networking website earlier this month. It topped the list in Singapore, the Netherlands, the UK, and the US, according to LinkedIn.
AI engineers are defined as professionals who design, develop, and implement AI models and algorithms to optimize processes and solve complex problems. And it’s not just AI engineers that are in demand, according to LinkedIn.
“Companies are looking for engineers, period. We found 26 different types of engineers on our lists, including cybersecurity engineer, platform engineer, machine learning engineer, and performance engineer,” the company’s Laura Holgers said in a blog post.
AI researcher was also a quickly growing role, appearing on the lists of three countries, the platform said. This included spots among the top three fastest-growing jobs in Singapore and Israel.
“Overall, we found that technology continues to be the fastest-growing industry, a trend that has remained consistent over the last few years,” Holgers said.
According to LinkedIn, every country it examined included some kind of tech role among its top 10 fastest-growing roles. However, the analysis also found that a gender gap remains in many engineering and technology roles.
For example, only one in five of AI engineers are women in the US, and only one in four of AI researchers. Women make up approximately 17% of nuclear engineers.
The reports also showed a spike in travel and hospitality jobs, as the industry continues to demonstrate growth in post-Covid era, with roles like travel assistant and travel adviser the fastest growing in countries like Italy, Indonesia, and Spain.
There is also a growing demand for green jobs, according to LinkedIn, as well as country-specific roles.
The most sought-after professionals in Switzerland, known for its banking sector, were treasury managers, cybersecurity specialists, and accountants. In Germany, which is undergoing a large-scale energy transformation, energy specialists were in high demand.
Curiously, the fastest-growing job in Australia, an English speaking country, was English as a second language teacher.
The reports were based on LinkedIn data from 21 countries across the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East covering the period from January 1st, 2022, to July 31st, 2024.
