US approves limited release of Anthropic's Mythos 5 AI model

Key takeaways:

The US government has cleared Anthropic’s Mythos 5 AI model for limited release to a group of trusted US organizations, the company said on Friday.

"Today, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure," Anthropic said in a statement.

"We're restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we're continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again," the company added.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters that the approved organizations will include more than 100 ‌companies and institutions, including many Fortune 500 companies.

The announcement comes two weeks after the Trump administration blocked Anthropic from providing Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to all foreign nationals, whether inside or outside the US, including the company’s employees. This forced Anthropic to "abruptly disable" access to its new models.

The government expressed concerns about the models’ potential misuse by adversaries in China, Russia, or other countries.

“Anthropic has worked with the US government to address risks associated with the Covered Models,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote to Anthropic's chief compute officer in a letter seen by Bloomberg.

“These efforts have yielded significant progress,” he wrote, saying that he has determined “that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model.”

Anthropic initially believed the restrictions were imposed because officials had become aware of a method of bypassing, or "jailbreaking," Fable 5 to identify software vulnerabilities.

The company said at the time that it had instituted strong safeguards that greatly reduced the possibility of Fable’s misuse. However, the approval does not include permission to release Fable.

“We are working to provision the approved set of providers and restore their access to Mythos 5 as quickly as possible. We are pleased to see this progress and continue to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again,” Anthropic said in a statement.

The US government and Anthropic have had a rocky relationship in recent months. Earlier this year, the administration labeled the company a "supply chain risk" after Anthropic refused to drop safety guardrails restricting its AI models from being used for autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance.

But Anthropic is not the only one facing regulatory hurdles. Also on Friday, it was announced that OpenAI is limiting access to its new GPT-5.6 models to trusted partners at the US government’s request.
