Developers can now launch their apps in ChatGPT under new OpenAI program

Apps that went through the selection process could be released starting next year.

OpenAI has announced that it’s inviting developers to submit their apps to ChatGPT. Those interested can now submit their app for review, after which OpenAI may decide to publish it or not.

In October, the company introduced apps in its chatbot to expand the AI assistant's capabilities. Companies like Spotify, Canva, and Zillow have already integrated their services with ChatGPT.

According to the company, apps “extend” conversations with ChatGPT through “new context and letting users take actions like order groceries, turn an outline into a slide deck, or search for an apartment.”

The company shared that it’s also introducing “an app directory right inside ChatGPT, where users can browse featured apps or search for any published app.”

Developers can already use the Apps software development kit (SDK), which is in beta, to create apps that are “tightly scoped, intuitive in chat, and deliver clear value.”

Once the apps are submitted, the developers can check their approval status in the OpenAI Developer Platform.

When it comes to the rollout of the first apps, OpenAI notes that the first set of approved apps will be released gradually next year.

The apps within ChatGPT aren’t the only feature that the company is introducing to make users prolong their use of its chatbot. Previously, ChatGPT introduced a new feature called Instant Checkout.

The feature enables users in the US to purchase items from more than a million sellers, including SKIMS, Glossier, and Spanx, which are found on Shopify.

Nevertheless, ChatGPT isn’t the only chatbot that offers this feature, as Preplexity has “Buy with Pro,” which was first introduced in 2024.
