Cuomo’s last weapon against Mamdani is AI slop

New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo is the latest politician to target his political enemies using artificial intelligence (AI) slop and get slammed for doing so.

Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani is poised to win against Cuomo, who’s running as an independent in Tuesday’s mayoral election, as polls show Mamdani’s advantage at +14.7 points, according to Real Clear Polling.

The intense race involved conspiracy theories, xenophobic remarks, and AI slop.

On Saturday, Cuomo posted an AI-generated video titled “A Zohran Halloween Special” on the X social network, which depicts Mamdani trick-or-treating in New York.

When asked where his costume is, the AI-generated Mamdani says he is a socialist and needs to take 52% of candies, which is a reference to his proposed tax increase.

The video, which has been viewed over four million times, has attracted heavy criticism. Some X users called AI use in political campaigns “gross and unethical,” while others suggested that using AI to smear opponents “should be a career-ending felony.”

However, it wasn’t the first time Cuomo’s campaign targeted Mamdani with AI slop.

Just last month, Cuomo posted – and soon deleted – another AI-generated video, in which Mamdani supporters are depicted as criminals, including abusers and human traffickers.

The video exaggerated Mamdani’s claims and policy proposals. For example, the abuser in the video referenced the Democratic frontrunner’s suggestion back in 2020 that specialized crisis responders and not the NYPD should be responding to domestic violence calls.

Moreover, the video was deemed racist, as a shoplifter was a Black man wearing a keffiyeh.

“This is like a banned cartoon’s level of racism,” an X user commented on the post sharing the deleted video.

“Is that a Black man dressed like a 70s pimp with a white van filled with drugged-out white women?? Cuomo just told Black people loud and clear what he thinks about us,” another user added.

Cuomo’s spokesman, Rich Azzopardi, said the video was a draft proposal posted by mistake by a junior staffer, explaining why it was removed five minutes after.

Cuomo was endorsed by President Donald Trump, who is no stranger to posting AI-generated videos on his official social media channels.

Following nationwide “No Kings” protests that took place in October, Trump posted a video of himself flying a fighter jet and dumping feces on protestors.

Moreover, the president sowed confusion in March by sharing an AI-generated video depicting the Gaza Strip as a Dubai-style resort with bearded belly dancers and a Gaza Trump hotel.

The creator of the video stated that it was intended as satire and that Trump posted it without providing the proper context.
