Google's Gemini to gain deeper app access on Android – even if you opt out

A recent email from Google's Gemini team has triggered widespread concern over app access and privacy.
Gemini will soon interact with core apps like Phone, Messages, WhatsApp – even if Gemini's app activity is disabled.
Effective July 7th, 2025, Gemini will begin helping users “use” key Android apps, regardless of opt-in status
The email claims this is to enhance usability across Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities.
Why is it concerning?
The vague language of help you use” is unclear – does it mean reading messages? Sending replies? Accessing call logs?
Gemini will gain this functionality even when Gemini app activity is turned off, representing an act of intrusion.
Users feel misled or powerless over what’s being enabled by default settings.
The email contains a link to the Gemini app privacy hub, which lacks detailed guidance. It’s like trying to find the customer service contact email for a national bus or train company.
One user reacted scornfully on X, pointing out that “Gemini will index your phone even when it’s disabled.”
Well, this is made of terrible. @Google is so desperate to have everyone using #Gemini they're going to roll it out to everyone's #Android device on July 7th anyway … the stinker is, Gemini will index your phone even when it is disabled. pic.twitter.com/KG9FwQ4DEu

What can you do?
As always, it would be beneficial to check and fine-tune the settings in your Gemini or Android app closer to July 7th, potentially with the help of AI, like ChatGPT.
You can also consider disabling Gemini or restricting app permissions via your Android settings for the time being.
Google currently says features can be turned off in the "apps settings page," but it does not provide specific instructions.
Many Android users haven’t received the email, further muddying communication.
