Microsoft is introducing an in-app browser for its Copilot app on Windows 11 and macOS, enabling users to open web links given by the AI, conveniently without having to leave the Copilot interface.
Instead of sending users to their default browser, Copilot will open the linked webpage in a panel alongside the conversation, effectively putting an AI chatbot and web browser into the same window.
The feature has been tested since the start of this year, with Microsoft allowing administrators to enable it now, and a broader rollout expected in late November.
The goal behind the browser introduction is to sync the habits of reading webpages from Copilot’s suggestions, while being able to keep the original chat with the AI visible. In turn, it also gives less dependency on the default browser, particularly when Chrome, Firefox, or Edge might already have a multitude of tabs open.
This separate entity will include Microsoft Edge technology, essentially harmonizing with the Windows 11 habits of the user.
Redditors not impressed
The new feature however, drew a largely negative reaction, particularly on Reddit. On the r/windowscentral Subreddit, one user sounded off:
No. Copilot is a scourge that I avoid at all opportunities. Having a browser inside Copilot sounds like Hell,@Novotus_Ketovur, on the r/windowscentral Subreddit.

Another Reddit user was similarly unconvinced, saying they currently open Copilot links in their “actual web browser” and that the built-in version would have to be “really good” to make them change that habit.

Microsoft hasn’t had the smoothest of years, receiving adverse reaction to its AI deployment left, right, and center.
First, in February, there were issues with confidentiality, as Microsoft's Copilot assistant caught a bug that gave it access to organizations' confidential emails.

Then there were issues with the content Copilot churned out, with memes created back in March making a mockery of what was dubbed “Microslop.”
Developers were up in arms in June as well over restrictions on how they could spend their AI tokens.
