Mozilla is working on an AI-powered Firefox browser

Firefox users will be able to decide for themselves whether they want AI to help them browse.

Mozilla has introduced “AI Window” to Firefox, a new AI-powered chatbot that users can enable or disable at any time.

The company shares that while some AI-powered browsers leave users with the two options of either using the AI all the time or not using it at all, Firefox will provide them with the possibility to switch it on or off when they choose.

While it’s not yet sure when Firefox will introduce the latest feature, Mozilla is inviting users to participate in the development of the AI Window by signing up to be among the first to try the feature and provide feedback.

According to Mozilla, Firefox users will be able to choose from three browsing options: the standard browsing window, the AI Window, or the private browsing window.

This won’t be the first AI-powered feature in Firefox. Mozilla has recently introduced the “shake to summarize” feature for iPhone users, providing them with AI-generated summaries of webpages.

The feature works on iPhone 15 Pro or later models with iOS 26. The summaries are created using Apple Intelligence. For devices running later versions of iOS, a summary of page contents is created using Mozilla's cloud-based AI.

Firefox's future AI enhancements come as more browsers are being powered by AI. For example, Google has added several AI-powered features to Chrome, including personalized online assistance, more detailed search, and enhanced online safety.

Despite the new feature not being available yet, Mozilla already promises the users “a fully opt-in experience,” “features that protect [their] choice,” as well as “more transparency around how your data is used.”

However, the launch of Google AI Mode, an AI-powered search experience that provides responses to more complex queries, which was released in May of this year, has already raised concerns among publishers, content creators, and advertisers.

They are concerned that an AI-based search experience could completely reshape how we browse the web, leading to content theft and revenue loss.
