An increasing number of pastors are using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to craft sermons, raising concerns about technology replacing spiritual guidance.
A survey conducted by AiForChurchLeaders and Exponential AI NEXT, shared by Christian News, includes responses from 594 pastors and church staff members.
Nearly two-thirds of respondents who prepare sermons say they use AI tools in their sermon writing process.
Some 61% of pastors report using AI weekly or daily, compared to 43% last year. Of those, 25% report using AI daily.
ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool among clergymen, used by 26% of church leaders for sermon preparation, research, and crafting church communications.
Although clerics are embracing technological advancements, the widespread use of AI raises ethical concerns.
Some church leaders report worrying about misinformation and the theological accuracy or alignment of AI-generated content. Others are concerned that AI may replace or diminish personal and spiritual guidance.
The Vatican encourages the advancement of technology, viewing it as part of the “collaboration of man and woman with God in perfecting the visible creation.”
However, in a note released earlier this year, the Holy See expressed a wide range of concerns regarding AI, including the potential of using the technology in war, which could threaten the “survival of entire regions or even of humanity itself.”
