An AI agent may have deleted an entire edited season of Swedish reality show The Challenge, forcing the broadcaster to postpone its premiere until 2027, according to reports. TV4 denies the claims.
The Challenge – which has been described as “the world’s toughest show” for the contestants taking part in a reality series – now faces one of the world’s toughest edits.
The reality TV series was just 5 weeks away from its scheduled November 22nd premiere when disaster struck at production company Masiff, Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports.
Sources at the production company told the newspaper on Wednesday that an AI agent, after being granted access to its servers, deleted the entire completed and edited season of The Challenge, with no way to recover the project.
One source claimed that several hundred days of work had been lost, potentially requiring hundreds of people to redo the editing.
TV4 confirms the loss of edited material
However, while the show’s broadcaster has confirmed loss of the edited footage, it did not say that rogue AI agents were to blame.
“What we’ve been told by the production team is that there has been a technical failure that caused the edited footage to disappear, meaning that we have to edit it all over again,” a TV4 spokesperson told Aftonbladet.
“As a result, we need to postpone the premiere until 2027.”
However, the broadcaster subsequently disputed the AI allegations, with head of programming Mia Lindqvist denying that the incident involved AI agents acting autonomously.
She added that the raw footage remained intact.
Most production companies use AI in their workflows nowadays,TV4's head of programming Mia Lindqvist tells Aftonbladet.
“In this case, the major problem is that their backup system failed, meaning they have to re-edit everything from scratch.”
Later on Wednesday, TV4 stated that its investigation pointed to “human error” at Mastiff and “not AI.”
To date, no detailed technical explanation for the loss has been made public to establish what caused the deletion or whether AI played any role.
There have been other reported cases of AI agents wiping data and backups.
Earlier this year, a chief executive of a car rental firm shared on social media how AI coding agent Claude deleted his firm’s entire production database – and its backups – in less than 10 seconds, leaving car rental clients unable to pick up their vehicles.
