What is Norton Family?

Norton is a well-established information security brand known for its expertise in protecting users from digital threats. One of its standout products is Norton Family, a trusted parental control solution. It was initially offered as a freemium service, but Norton Family transitioned to a paid model in 2018, significantly enhancing its features and performance.

This shift allowed Norton to improve its robust set of monitoring tools, including web filtering, screen time management, and location tracking. These tools are available across Windows, Android, and iOS. However, they do not work on macOS.

You can bundle Norton Family with other Norton services, such as its antivirus. This makes it a cost-effective, all-in-one solution for protecting your family and their devices.

Key features of Norton Family parental control

Norton Family offers comprehensive features to give you complete control over and insights into your children’s online activities and tech usage. Here’s a detailed overview.

Web and app filtering

Norton Family offers efficient and customizable website and application filtering. I counted 47 block categories, like adult content, hate speech, drugs, and similar. Norton Family also gives you some website restriction controls.

You can block a site to prevent all access, let Norton issue a warning to your child when attempting access, or allow access but monitor all activities on it. I find this customization parent and child-friendly, as it provides more online freedom without sacrificing security. Considering rigid online access restrictions may create tensions, this looks like a golden middle solution.

Norton Family also monitors searches on Google, Yahoo, Bing search engines, as well as YouTube. Regarding applications, it displays what apps are downloaded and installed on children's devices. Parents get a detailed report on app usage and then can discuss usage rules or proceed with blocking it.

On a less positive note, this service does not monitor social media conversations or text messages. As much as I value online privacy, this is a significant setback for parents whose children use social media a lot.

Screen time management

Norton Family also includes screen time management, one of the most popular and widely used child online safety features. It is also customizable, letting parents set different daily allowances for school days and weekends.

There's an Instant Lock feature (unavailable on iOS devices) that lets you remotely lock a child's device. It's a safe option to deny content access immediately if parents notice harmful online activities. Also, the device can be unlocked via a chosen PIN code, so internet access can be restored just as easily.

A child can also remotely request more screen time. I find Norton Family's freedom and customization options reasonable, as it gives families a chance to negotiate online rules, instead of simply denying access.

Location and geofencing

Knowing a child's exact geographical location is what all responsible parents want until children reach adulthood. Norton Family offers two great features.

Firstly, this app displays an approximation of the child's device. It mixes Wi-Fi, cellular network, and GPS signals to make it more accurate. It gives sufficient and precise details to start working on in the worst-case scenario. Norton Family also stores location history for the last 30 days.

Even the most attentive parents cannot monitor their child's location at all times. In this case, the geofencing feature is especially convenient. It allows defining geographical safe zones. Norton Family will issue an immediate and automatic alert if the child's device leaves these boundaries. This way, parents don't have to monitor the app continuously to know where their child is.

Conversation and social media monitoring

This is a major setback for some parents whose children use social media a lot. Norton Family does not monitor any chats or direct messages. Even if you buy its most elaborate Norton 360 Deluxe plan, it offers only partial social media monitoring features, like account credentials leaks and feed inspection for malware and harmful content.

In comparison, parental controls app Bark monitors children's text messages, emails, and over 30+ social media apps. It notices cyberbullying or child exploitation, which is one of the most severe cybercrimes against children online.

I consider Norton's choice a tradeoff between privacy and security. Although I typically lean towards a security-first approach, there are also many instances where online privacy is beneficial for youngsters and allows them to experience the environment individually.

Privacy and data security

Norton Family asks you to use your child's real name, so ensuring it is kept safe is essential. Norton is a leading cybersecurity brand that continuously receives high independent testing results from cybersecurity software rating experts. Also, it caught all malware samples during our in-house testing.

This software uses the industry-standard AES-256 encryption algorithm. It is widely considered sufficiently safe and is also used by banks and other cybercrime-sensitive enterprises. Norton encrypts data-in-transit, which means that all children's online activities captured via the Norton Family app are encrypted when sent to its cloud.

It also uses data-at-rest encryption, so it is also stored safely. I must also outline that Norton is known to collect user data for marketing and service functionality. Although I'd like to see it reduced to a minimum, it is also a common practice within the IT industry.

Plans, pricing & bundles

Norton Family offers affordable plans to keep your children safe online while securing all your devices. With unlimited device connections, it’s perfect for large families. The standalone plan costs $49.99 per year, which works out to just $4.16 per month. So, it’s an affordable way to have comprehensive parental controls, including web and app filtering, time limits, location tracking, and activity reports.

Norton Family can also be bundled with Norton 360 Deluxe or Premium for even greater value. This all-in-one solution safeguards your children’s online activity and your family’s overall digital safety. It also offers additional security features like malware protection, a VPN, dark web monitoring, and password management.

With flexible payment options and a 60-day money-back guarantee, Norton Family is an excellent choice if you want peace of mind about your family’s online safety.

You may notice that the standalone Family Premier plan costs the same as Norton 360 Deluxe, although the latter offers more features. That's because Norton 360 Deluxe’s price increases to $119.99/year after the first-year discount. Meanwhile, Norton Family subscription prices do not change.

To break down its pricing, Norton offers intuitive plans depending on your needs. The Family Premier focuses solely on children's online safety, and does not include additional benefits while keeping it affordable.

The Standard plan is its initial cybersecurity offering. It includes an antivirus, VPN, password manager, and dark web monitoring, but does not offer parental control features found in the Family plan.

I consider Norton 360 Deluxe the best price-value option if you require additional cybersecurity benefits. It also includes all parental control benefits and adds a privacy monitor, which checks for personal information exposure on data brokers' sites.

Lastly, the Norton 360 with Lifelock Select Plus adds identity theft protection and insurance. I recommend choosing it only if you need one, because it doesn't add any other cyber safety benefits.

Setup & on-boarding

I recommend Norton Family to all users, with or without similar software experience. I found its setup straightforward and the app easy to navigate. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Go to the Norton Family website and click the Buy now button.

  9. You must also install Norton Family on your children's devices.
  10. On a chosen device, go to the official Norton website and log in with your credentials.
  11. In the Norton Family setup window, choose the Child profile option.
  12. Download and install the app and follow further instructions to finalize.

From here, you can also add more children's profiles, up to 15. Also, consider adding the Norton Family app to your smartphone so that you can keep an eye on your child's well-being at all times.

User experience

Norton Family is quite user-friendly and intuitive. Its interface is good, and its design is consistent across desktop, iOS, and Android apps, as explained below.

Desktop

Norton Family has a wide range of features, so I checked its dashboard first. It has an excellent layout displaying the most important information in one window. You can check web, mobile and activities, screen time, search queries, and location at a single glance. You can switch between the children’s profiles above.

Overall, I haven't noticed any significant issues that would've stopped me from using Norton Family app. However, the wide range of data monitoring and detailed reports may require a short time to get used to. Also, you may need to run more than one Norton app if you choose the 360 Deluxe bundle.

Mobile and tablets

Norton Family’s mobile apps make it simple for parents to navigate features like web filtering, time limits, and location tracking. I found the mobile app layout is just as intuitive as the desktop version. It has clear icons and well-organized menus, making it effortless to monitor and adjust settings or device permissions on the go.

However, you will notice significant changes between the Android and iOS Norton Family apps. Because Apple has very strict app permission controls, some features, like Instant Lock, will be unavailable. Keep in mind that iOS cybersecurity apps usually offer fewer benefits due to these policies.

Customer support

Norton Family offers 24/7 customer support through live chat, phone, social media, and an active forum, ensuring parents can seek help anytime. Furthermore, its online support library is comprehensive, featuring setup tutorials, troubleshooting guides, and video resources to assist users in resolving issues independently.

However, I noticed some areas that need improvement. While the support channels are accessible, in my experience, the representatives provided generic responses that lacked the in-depth knowledge necessary to resolve complex problems.

The live chat process can be time-consuming, while phone support quality could be more consistent. Despite these challenges, the forum is efficient, often providing helpful advice and swift solutions from knowledgeable users.

How does the Norton Family compare

To wrap it up, let's see how Norton Family compares with some of the best parental control apps in the industry.

As you can see, the services are mostly similar, unless you compare different prices. What I'd like to draw your attention to is that Norton Family and Aura offer a plethora of additional cybersecurity tools, like antivirus and identity theft protection. However, Bark and Qustodio may be your priority picks if you've got that covered.

Verdict: is Norton Family worth it?

Yes, Norton Family is worth it, especially if you do not have other cybersecurity tools, like an antivirus and a password manager. Even as a standalone service, its child protection encompasses location tracking, website filtering, elaborate online activities monitoring, and remote lock features.

I think its user-friendly design, unlimited device coverage, and affordable pricing make it an excellent choice for large families looking to safeguard their children's online activities. However, keep in mind that its bundle prices do increase after the first year.

However, limitations such as its lack of conversation monitoring and inconsistent customer support may be drawbacks for some users. Overall, Norton Family provides solid value and effective tools for parents committed to protecting their kids in the digital world.
