Police arrest ex-Moldovan official for leaking secrets to Belarus

Law enforcement authorities from Czechia, Hungary, and Romania have worked closely to capture an individual who is being investigated for transmitting state secrets on a continuous basis.
According to Eurojust, which offered support in this case, the suspect had two meetings with intelligence officers from the State Security Committee of Belarus in Budapest in 2024 and 2025. These meetings posed a threat to Romania’s national security.
Law enforcement agencies discovered that the suspect regularly handed over sensitive state secrets to officers of the Belarusian secret service without permission from 2024 onwards. In exchange, he received an unknown amount of money.
The suspect previously held a leadership position in the Information and Security Service of the Republic of Moldova, which granted him access to confidential and highly classified state secrets.
The man was arrested in Romania on the afternoon of September 8th, 2025. Europol played a significant role in the case.
“With Eurojust’s coordination, authorities from Romania, Czechia, and Hungary were able to exchange information and evidence and prove the criminal activity of the individual. The Agency also ensured the swift execution of several European Investigation Orders,” Eurojust says in a press release.
According to Eurojust, the case demonstrates the importance of international cooperation between law enforcement authorities when investigating such malicious activities.
Earlier this year, Eurojust established a joint investigation with German and Romanian law enforcement agencies, successfully dismantling a group of scammers that defrauded customers of over €400,000.
The criminals used phishing techniques to obtain login credentials from legitimate sellers on a well-known online commerce platform. Once they gained access to the sellers’ accounts, they quickly changed the passwords, effectively locking the rightful owners out of their accounts.
The scammers then published online advertisements for fake goods on the sellers’ accounts. Over 550 victims completed their orders and purchased goods that would never arrive.
