Sister Hong scandal – how Telegram leaks and TikTok memes exposed 1,000 men

The “Sister Hong” scandal has shocked China and the internet at large, as over 1,000 men were secretly filmed in a sex trap, with leaked footage spreading across Telegram, Weibo, TikTok, and X – turning real victims into viral memes.

A disturbing case of non-consensual meme videos went viral after hundreds of men were lured to a sexual predator’s home, secretly filmed during intimate encounters, and exposed online.

The footage, originally leaked on Telegram and Weibo, later spread to platforms like Instagram and X, where victims were mocked and turned into memes.

The predator, going by the name of Sister Hong (Chinese for Red), presented as a widow or married woman in online sex chats.

Subsequently, the victims were allegedly heterosexual men who believed they were meeting a woman.

The recordings were done secretly in a private home, some in exchange for small “gifts” like grocery items.

The perpetrator was arrested on July 6th under Chinese privacy and obscenity laws.

Sick memes for sick minds

The macabre incident has been troubling on a variety of levels.

Firstly, for the sickly humorous take on events – Telegram groups, which are often known for explicit content, were the first leak points.

Popular TikTok trends included “Red Uncle” dances, Halloween costume jokes, and “He fell for that?” memes.

Some of the victims’ faces were not blurred in the viral posts.

And one user on X even dressed up their dog to represent the sex offender.

When is a leak a scandal?

Secondly, when looking into the gory details of such a case, it’s women who often receive shaming or apathy. In this case, it was men who triggered moral panic and mockery.

For example, in 2014, cases like intimate photos of Jennifer Lawrence and dozens of other female celebrities were leaked from iCloud.

Many online commenters minimized the leak, framing it as her fault for taking nude selfies at all.

And then in 2020, with Belle Delphine – the OnlyFans content leak, internet personality and model whose paid content was pirated and widely circulated without consent.

Delphine was also mocked for her sexuality and infantilized public persona, blurring victim perception.

This particular case had a maelstrom of different reactions, with Reddit users comparing it to an episode of Black Mirror.

One user even speculated, commenting, “My mind is blown how these guys could even make out with him and all” – seemingly a victim of the online pantomime of reaction.

Really, a conversation should be had about gender politics and porn crime, not just spectacle and shame.

Real-world consequences

When delving even deeper into the Reddit reaction, user @popculturechat summed up the situation well by exasperating that “everyone on social media is treating this like it's some joke.”

Another user replied that they witnessed in their high school that “this is the viral meme of the week among teenagers,” calling attention to the fact that minors need supervision online.
