OpenAI is mulling over the possibility of implementing an option for users to sign in to third-party apps using their ChatGPT accounts. This isn’t surprising, as ChatGPT is already one of the largest consumer applications in the world.
Although ChatGPT is still mostly used for fun, work, writing, or cheating, OpenAI seems eager to expand into other areas such as shopping, social media, search, or personal devices.
The platform has around 600 million monthly active users, and Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, obviously wants to capitalize on its popularity.
That’s why on its website, OpenAI said it was exploring a “Sign in with ChatGPT” feature and looking for developers “interested in integrating this capability into their own apps.” The company also posted a preview of the experience.

If the idea works, the feature will undoubtedly help OpenAI compete with tech giants such as Apple, Microsoft, and Google. They all offer users a quick way to sign in to third-party apps.
Earlier in May, OpenAI launched a preview of the “Sign in with ChatGPT” experience for developers in Codex CLI, the company’s open-source AI coding tool for terminals. The feature allows developers to connect their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their API accounts.

It also looks like OpenAI is keen to get a wide array of companies on board. The interest form that the firm posted on its page asks companies to specify their app’s user base, which can range from fewer than 1,000 weekly users to over 100 million weekly users.
Developers are also asked how they charge for AI features today and whether they’re currently customers of the OpenAI API.
Back in 2023, Altman stated on X that the company might be able to offer a “Sign in with OpenAI” option by 2024.
It’s a little late now, but it appears the feature is about to be released this year. However, it’s not yet clear when exactly the new experience will become available to ChatGPT users or how many companies have actually signed up.
